Skegness Town 2 Horncastle Town 4 Lincolnshire League

02-04-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

The Challenge Cup finalists were this week pitched against a Skegness Town side riding high in the Lincs league.

Town were again without the services of several regular first team players and in particular a Goalkeeper (Town have played seven different keepers this season) so up stepped a new signing Luke Robinson of Wragby.

Horncastle started ok and should have done better with chances falling to Tony and Michael but found themselves a goal behind on 24 mins when Skegness scored with a good goal giving the Town keeper no chance. Town battled back well and got themselves level with a great strike from "have you seen my new boots" Michael!  So off the Wongers strolled to the bar for a bit of liquid refreshment and very nice it was thankyou.

Town took the lead early in the second half after a quick corner by Chalky to Jacko who crossed for Tony to head home.  Jacko then got on the score sheet himself putting Town 3-1 up after good work from Tony.  Dave A then replaced Smithy and Harry came on for Dave M as Town Kept the same formation with a comfortable lead.  Town then went 4-1 up after pressuring Skegness enough for them to score an own goal.

Podge made his last change bringing off Ollie for Tom P as Town looked to see the game out without having any more injuries.  Skegness did manage to give Town a slight scare with a few minutes left when they scored their consolation.  Town ended worthy winners beating again a side much higher them themselves in the divison.

Wonger Wally of the week...the groundsman I'd say as the pitch was woeful but then again if you have car boots and scooter rallies on it what do you expect, wouldn't catch DJ allowing that.....No way Jose! UTW

Team: Luke Robinson,Dave,Gaz,Alco,Johno,Chalky,Michael,Smithy,Ollie,Jacko &Tony.

Boston United Res 0 Horncastle Town 1 Lincolnshire League Challenge Cup S/F

26-03-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

A fantastic result for the injury stricken Town warriors that sees them in the final at Sincil Bank. Before the game I will admit that the Wongers were worried about this
game with all the injuries and the players missing.

Town stated the game really well playing some good neat passing football whilst the opposition were happy to just lump the ball long.  Town had the best of the half and just before the break Tony was clear on goal and was brought down just outside the area which saw the Boston centre half sent off much to the Wongers delight ! Off to the bar we went and quite happy with Towns efforts.

The second half started and Town again started well with Jacko and Ollie bossing the midfield and their Boston counterparts struggling to cope.  Boston slowly came into the game and Lewis was not for beating, everything they threw at him he kept out and inparticular one save from a free kick was world class which was followed by a display of passion from Lewis shouting and backslapping his players ! Town had their chances with Michael and Tony going close . Podge made two changes bringing on Will for the returning and hard working Chalky and Dave for the injured Browny who had left his mark on the game and Sarges shin.

On to the dreaded extra time but Town were easily the better side in the first 15 but could not convert the chances. Town got their chance to go ahead in the next half when they were awarded a penalty but the keeper saved well from Ollie.  Just as we were thinking penalties and disappointment Gaz received the ball on the edge of the area and curled the ball into the net off the inside of the post to send players, Podge and Dale and all the Wongers into a frenzy.  Could we hang on ???? Course we could apart from the little scare at the end when the big Boston striker ( you know) should have equalised .... But be didn't !

Game over and all the players deserve great credit for this result, only team to have gone to Boston this season to keep a clean sheet and only team to win there and most important the only team to stop them doing the double!  Wonger Wally of the week .... Step forward sarge !
On we march to The final against Lincoln United , come on Town.UTW

Louth Town Reserves 3 Horncastle Town 0 Lincolnshire League

23-03-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town were facing 7 players from the mighty White wolves first team this evening while having an injury ravaged side themselves. Town more then held their own in the first half and had the better chances to open the scoring. To make matters worse for Town the return of Flash was marred by him picking up an injury. Town went in at half time 1 nil down after Ollie J fouled in the area with only minutes remaining. Ollie K took Flash's place and Town played Tony up front on his own.

Not to dwell to much about the Louth Town side well mostly first team but they scored a further two goals in the second half but again Town will feel this was another game they should have got something from. Tony had a great chance to give Town a goal when he was through 1 on 1 with the goalie and was clearly brought down but the refereete (female) waved play on, later booking Tony for his first challenge of the night.  Wonger Wally of the Week was an easy choice Louth number 10 , Jam apparently his name is ...... Just an annoying whinging and not very good player !!!

Special mention to the travelling Wongers who again this season outnumbered the home fans which is a credit to the club.
So we roll on to Boston on Saturday UTW.

Sleaford Town 0 Horncastle Town 4 Lincolnshire League

19-03-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town were still without several players for the trip to Sleaford and I dont think they will have an easier afternoon in the Lincs League this season.

Town caused Sleaford problems from the start and were ahead inside 15 minutes when a cross by Smithy was met by Gaz in the area who was clearly pushed, Tony stepped up and calmly scored from the resulting penalty.

A shout of "well done Smithy" by Podge was met with a wave from the man himself !
If there was an award for the best dressed manager then the Sleaford gaffer would win hands down with his pristine white shirt, Tie, Waistcoat and to top it all off Crocodile skin shoes !
Back to the game and Town were busy pushing forward and Gaz again went close with a header that tested the very capable Sleaford keeper.

Wonger Wally of the week goes to Sleaford number 8 who in the words of the gaffer was a right tool, after Gaz had fouled him he then goes on a rant how Gaz is a marked man and he had his number, shame he couldn't keep up with him for the rest of the game.

The first half finished with Smithy hitting the bar with a curling shot from outside the area. After a couple of beers in the very nice bar it was time for the second half to kick off.
Much was the same this half with Town pushing forward with Jacko in command of the midfield, within the first 5 mins Jacko and Tony had tested the keeper.  Michael made it 2 nil and soon after Town found themselves 3 up when Man of the Match Smithy got his reward scoring a goal with a great finish.

Johno was then replaced by Spoons as he had a injury that hopefully is not too serious.
At the moment Michael finds himself as Town's prolific scorer and he did it again to make it 4 in 3 games when he finished off the best move of the match which was started with a majestic bit of skill from Smithy who laid the ball to Gaz who let Michael in to finish.
With the game now sewn up Podge made two more changes bringing on Matt Simmons and Tom Phillips for Frank and Browny.

The suave manager of Sleaford tried in vain to change the game by giving his defender a piece of paper and telling him 4-3-3 now......the defender looked bemused and put the paper in his sock......

A good victory by Town following the disappointment of Wednesday and on to Louth we go for another night game. UTW

Team: Danny,Frank,Dave,Browny,Johno,Ollie K,Jacko,Gaz,Smithy,Michael & Tony. Subs:Matt Simmons,Spoons,Tom Phillips.

Lincoln Utd Res 4 Horncastle Town 4 Lincolnshire League

11-03-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

This was without doubt the best away game I have witnessed in the Lincs League, an eight goal thriller.
Town could not have started any worse finding themselves one nil down in the first five minutes and to be honest Lincoln United were all over Town and playing some good neat football.
To make matters worse United took a two goal lead in the 20th minute and Alco who was a Wonger for the night due to injury was sensing an embarrassing scoreline...... Lewis in goal made two fantastic saves to keep the score down, that was in despite of having a little Clash moment (should I stay or should I go) but on the stroke of half time Matty got the ball on the left wing and delivered an inch perfect cross for Tony to pull a goal back with a great header at the far post.
After a couple of swift pints it was time for the second half and what a half it was.
Town started the second half with a spring in their step and went in search of the equaliser, they got their reward when Jacko played a great ball to find Matty who made no mistake.
United came straight back at them with a ball over the top and Lewis was judged to have brought their forward down and Town found themselves facing a penalty and Lewis was shown a yellow card. United scored from the resulting penalty and Town had to pick themselves up again.
Gaz and Matty were causing United all sorts of problems on the left side and but Matty got injured in a challenge and had to go off to be eplaced by Mickey.
Jacko really was having a great game and bossing the midfield and the United number 4 who was given the accolade of Wonger of the week could not get near him.
Now the United number 4 thought it would be a good idea to enter into a bit of banter with the watching Wongers.........and calling our defence Sh*t......what a mistake, the best move of the match saw a great passing move finished off by Mickey to send the Wongers wild and of course giving the United (you are blowing out of your Arse) number 4 some more stick!
Now by this time Alco had already decided that he was not playing football anymore as he found watching the game with the Wongers far more enjoyable.
Dave was replaced by Jamie and the noise from the Wongers did not cease as Town pushed forward yet again and it was a moment to savour as Jacko pounced onto the ball in the area and smashed the ball home to see the Wongers and the players burst into celebrations, Jacko was at the bottom of a pile of Town players, Lewis ran all the way from his goal kissing the badge to join in and the Wongers..........there was cuddles, there was hoardings being kicked and Townie jumped the barrier to celebrate on the pitch......all fantastic stuff.
United came back at Town again and Jamie got injured in a crunching challenge that saw....Frank stride onto the pitch.
Town fought hard but somehow could not hold on for the last few minutes and United levelled the game.
The whistle went and it was over.
What a game and a great display by all the lads and a fantastic night out for the Wongers.

Team: Lewis, Dave, Gaz, Shelley, Johno, Jacko, Ollie J, Ollie K, Matty, Tony & Will. Subs: Jamie, Mickey & Frank.

Cleethorpes 4 Horncastle Town 3 Lincolnshire League

19-02-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town will be disappointed not to have come away with at least a share of the points from Cleethorpes.

On a day that saw Podge without a regular keeper up stepped Dave Marshall in between the sticks, that along with still being without Johno, Flash and Matty.  The pitch had three inspections before the Ref said it was playable and to be honest it was not and at times it could be said that it was dangerous.

The game started with Town having more of the ball trying to play in the dreadful conditions, Cleethorpes tested Dave a couple of times in the half but Dave made two good saves.
On 21 mins Tony got the ball in the area and went past a defender before curling the ball past the keeper. Two minutes later and Town doubled their lead when Gaz won the ball and played a great pass to Tony who sent Chalky on his way to score.

Cleethorpes then stared to press Town back in their own half and on the 33 minute hit the bar but fortune was on Town side as the ball bounced clear.
Town gave away a silly corner in the 39th minute and Cleethorpes scored from the resulting corner.

In the last minute of the first half Chalky and Tony were through and Tony was brought down in the area but to everyones suprise the idiotic Ref gave the free kick to Cleethorpes.
The watching Wongers were drenched and in need of a couple of pints to dry off and it was while enjoying these welcoming refreshment that the second half started and Cleethorpes scored to make it 2-2.....then apparently according to a Cleethorpes supporter who came into the bar we heard "they have scored its 3-2 and the Town forward is a diving ******" surely not our Tony we thought but yes and Ollie scored from the spot.

So off we trudged in what was fast becoming quick sand like conditions to take our place at pitch side.  Alco had gone off injured and Frank was on with his bulging biceps rippling his shirt! The conditions were atrocious and Podge was questioning whether it should be called off (when we were winning by the way) but the Ref ignored all pleas of common sense.
Town were under pressure all half to be honest and Cleethorpes went on to score twice in a half that saw Ryan replace Michael.

With the last kick of the game Frank had a chance to put in his name in the Town history books when he was clear on goal but instead of curling it into the top corner....... skyed the ball high and wide. Jesus we all thought!

Anyway Wonger Wally of the week has to be the Ref for allowing the game to be played but we did find out that he was being assessed by someone from the FA so he is a bigger Wally for not having the balls to call it off!

Town team:Dave M, Jamie, Scott,Alco, Browny, Michael, Gaz, Ollie, Jacko, Chalky & Tony. Subs: Frank & Ryan.

Next Saturday sees Town away to Boston United Reserves in the cup and it is reported as a 130PM kick off, it would be great to take a good following to York Street.....come on you know it makes sense.

Horncastle Town 1 Boston United Reserves 0 Lincolnshire League

12-02-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

This was never going to be an easy game, facing the league leaders is tough enough but Town were without four first team regulars, Scroggs, Johno, Flash and Alco.
Boston fielded their strongest team of Horncastle based players but they were to come up against a Town side that wore their heart on their sleeves, that battled for every ball and won the majority.

There was blood spilt and tempers were frayed in a contest that meant so much to the watching Wongers who were not let down by the performance of the excellent Town side.
The first half was a close affair with Town just having the edge and getting most results by playing the ball down the flanks to Matty and Michael. Boston had a couple of chances but were up against Lewis a keeper today who wasn't for beating!

Boston as we have come to expect were moaning at every decision that went against them and after Wonger Wally of the week SARG clearly dived and was booked the game was held up for what seemed like ages as the Boston coaching staff held a conference with the referee using what only can be described as foul language, even a senior Boston United supporter could be heard telling them they were a disgrace to Boston!!
Half time came and the talk around the ground was that Town were holding their own and you never know we may get a draw, but little did we know that the Town players were going to serve us up a treat.

The second half was under way the half time pints were being guzzled and we were off!!
Town came out with all guns blazing giving the opposition a torrid time, up front on his own the superb Tony Edwards who ran his heart out and chased every ball, in midfield Ollie was having the game of his life, mixing his normal game of quick feet and acute passing with tackles that were biting the Boston midfield, at the back Browny like a trojan horse he won everything.

It was nerve jangling stuff as Boston again went close but again Lewis made what can only be described as a world class save diving to the foot of the post almost Banks like.
Then it happened ........Matty into the area looked like he was brought down, the ball broke loose to Tony who made no mistake firing the ball into the roof of the net, the watching Wongers went wild and it was time for another beer!

Could they hang on? Could they indeed! The young Town team played like men never giving anything away, Boston just could not take the mauling.

Boston made a few changes to try and get something out of the game, they kept bringing on subs named BUSA but all their team seemed to be named BUSA, special place tho Boston isn't it ?

Wonger Wally of the week SARG then clearly elbowed Browny in the face cutting his head, Browny had to come off and on went Hollywood, the Wongers by now were a nervous wreck, 20 mins to go.

Then Boston were down to 10 men when SARG brought down Jacko with a challenge worthy of a straight red but was shown his second yellow and off he marched, get it SARG ....marched!!!

As the Wongers held their beer Town held their nerve and the final whistle went..... every Town player was clapped off the pitch by the supporters and every one of them deserved it.
Lets not underestimate this result, Four big players missing, Boston top of the table and never played a game this season without scoring.

Podge was a proud manager at the end and in the clubhouse as once again all the players got a great reception as did the official's who had to put up with alot of verbal abuse from not only the Boston coaching staff but also a local based Boston supporter, just like it was said earlier... a disgrace.

Well done Town you were all fantastic and thank you for making a 47-year-old man jump around like we'd won the FA cup. Next week back to earth time with Cleethorpes away. UTW!!!.

Town Team: Lewis, Jamie L, Browny, Dave M, Gaz, Chalky, Michael, Matty, Ollie, Jacko & Tony. Subs: Bodds & Hollywood Dave.

Plough Skellingthorpe 0 Horncastle Town 3 Lincolnshire League

05-02-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town came away from a very windy and wet day in Skellingthorpe with all the points.
Initially Town were slow off the mark and it was Skellingthorpe who started the brighter with Town struggling in the windy conditions.

The game changed on the 15th minute after good work from Chalky on the left who crossed to give Flash his first touch of the game and he slotted the ball away neatly to give Town the lead.

Two minutes later and Town doubled their lead when Tony scored after getting on the end of a mis-directed shot from Michael.
The game should have been dead and buried in the first half when Flash failed to finish at the far post.

After the two quick goals Skellingthorpe didn't offer much of a threat and Lewis only had one save to make from a free kick.

The second half resumed with Town on the offensive which saw a hatful of chances fail to be put away, meanwhile up the other end saw Lewis pull off two very good saves.
With 25 mins remaining Dave was replaced by Jesus is a Wonger and he soon got stuck in with a couple of decent challenges.

Town looked in command of the game with Alco and Browny having good solid games at the back and Ollie and Jacko pulling the strings in midfield, Michael seems to be improving with every game putting in some great crosses from the right.

In the 70th minute Town went 3 up when Ollie struck the ball from 30 yards that deceived the goalie to hit the back of the net.

Podge made one more change bringing off Tony to be replaced by the very impressive Kieron.

All in all a good 3 points for Town and the only Wonger wally of the week was the weather!

Town Team: Lewis,Dave,Gaz,Alco,Brownie,Jacko,Ollie,Chalky,Michael,Flash & Tony. Subs: Jesus is a wonger & Kieron Hotchin.

Horncastle Town 3 Cleethorpes 3 Lincolnshire League

29-01-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town will feel that after their second half display that they should have come away from this game with all the points.  Expectations were high after last weeks goal feast but despite it being basically the same team apart from Gaz being injured Town struggled to get going.

Cleethorpes went ahead in the 8th minute which they did deserve after playing some good football in the opening few minutes, Town rallied quickly with stern words being shouted from the touchline by Podge.  Town were awarded an 8th minute penalty when Tony was brought down in the box and the Ollie casually slotted the ball away.

This should have been the springboard for Town to press further ahead........however on 18 minutes they found themselves behind again when Cleethorpes scored when their player was left unmarked in the box to freely head home a corner.  Again Town had to come from behind and on the 33 minutes, he did it again.....one chance, one shot, Flash equalised.

The second half saw Town put in a much improved performance with plenty of chances falling to Town's forwards who should have put the match out of Cleethorpes sight.  Again Cleethorpes went ahead again on 75 mins with the Town players were appealing that the Cleethorpes forward had handled the ball.  Town pressed forward straight away and within two minutes were level again when Dave threaded the ball through for Michael to equalise. Chalky was back in the starting line up and was very impressive throughout and after the game was awarded the man of the match in the bar.

Now.....Wonger Wally of the week is the Cleethorpes number 4 who was belting the ball out all second half and would you believe telling the watching Wongers to fetch, discraceful, also his attempt to handle the ball after being lobbed in the second half...priceless.

Town are away next Saturday at Skellingthorpe.

Town Team: Lee Edwards, Dave, Chalky, Johno, Alco, Matty, Michael, Jacko, Ollie J, Flash & Tony. Subs: Jesus is a Wonger & Alex.

Horncastle Town 8 Rustons 1 Lincolnshire League

22-01-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

This was a totally emphatic display by Town, which saw them score a hatful of goals at home to a Ruston team whose own results had improved of late. From the kick off Town set the tone to the match playing their brand of fast passing football with Ollie and Jacko totally running the midfield. Town had a few chances before Ollie powered the ball home from inside the area with 27 mins played. Within a few minutes Rustons struck back when a ball over the top caught the Town defence out and the Rustons striker fired past Lee Edwards who was in goal for the injured Scroggsy. Town went straight back on the attack and within a few minutes Flash curled a great shot into the top corner of the net. Just before the break Ollie was brought down in the area and then coolly slotted the ball home from the resulting penalty.

Minutes into the second half and Rustons were down to ten men after a player lashed out after a Jacko tackle. Town then extended their lead when Johno headed home an Ollie J free kick. Town never relented and went further in front via a Gaz curling shot. Matty and Tony gave way for Browny and Chalky and also Alex came on for Tony Edwards. Jacko got goal number 6 when his fierce shot gave the Ruston keeper no chance. With the Town keeper having nothing to do Town pressed forward and the hard working Michael saw his good shot go wide before he crossed the ball in the next attack for Alex to score, Flash added the eighth to finish a fine performance from Town.

Difficult to pick the Wonger Wally of the week but this was settled in the clubhouse after when it was revealed that a Town player had washed his muddy boots out in the shower! We just need to know who!!!!!!!! UTW.

Town side: Lee Edwards, Dave M, Gaz, Alco, Johno, Ollie J, Jacko, Michael Tony, Flash & Matty. Subs: Browny, Chalky & Alex Agorini.

Horncastle Town 1 Plough Skellingthorpe 1 Lincolnshire League

15-01-2011

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Town will be very disappointed not to take all the points from this game. The first half was a forgettable affair with the windy conditions playing a big part but it was Town who always looked the better of the two teams. After 15 mins of the second half a great run by man of the match Michael finished with a cross that Flash tucked away to send Town 1 up. Town should have finished the game off with good chances falling to Tony and Michael.

The Town goal was rarely threatened with Scroggsy having very little to do.  One of the highlights that does deserve a mention was a great piece of Tekkers shown by Johno whilst on the byline he somehow managed to curl the ball into the home dugout!

It was beginning to be a struggle to think who could be named Wonger Wally of the week when up poped the Ref to claim the prize.....Flash was given off side and swore at the linesman (no worse than any other player had said all game) and was given a straight red card!  Then to add to Town's worries Scroggsy was hurt in a challenge and was clearly in pain.

A rare mistake by the Town defence allowed Skellingthorpe to get back in the game with virtually the last kick.  The down side to this game is that Scroggsy thinks he will be out of action for a while and Flash will also miss a number of games due to the inconsistency of the Wonger Wally of the week!

Team: Scroggsy, Dave, Gaz, Alco, Johno, Ollie J, Michael, Jacko, Tony, Flash & Will. Subs: Frank, Shelley, Matt Simons & Matty Lowe.

Horncastle Town 1 Skegness Town 0 Lincolnshire League

20-11-2010

A Wongers view by Simon Nagle

A good win for Horncastle despite the unfortunate loss at Boston and they had a good edge most of the game. The starting line-up consisted of Scrogsy, Browny, Johno, Alco, Matty, Micky, Jacko, Ollie, Tommy, Gaz and Tony. On the bench for Town were Jamie, Frank and Dave. The 1st half was frustrating but the possession was mostly Towns but despite a few good breaks from Town the finish was never there. The ref gave a few bad decisions but we still came out with 0-0 at half time.

The 2nd half was under way and the ref seemed to be getting worse and worse. The chances came but again the finishes were never there. The ref gave a yellow card for Tony's clean challenge but the Skeggy players were putting the decisions into his head. As Town were on the break Matty Lowe picked up the ball and took it to the edge of the box. Looking as he was going to cross the ball Matty Lowe hit a volley and the keeper was nowhere, 1-0 Town!!!!!As Tony Edwards went in for a clean challenge getting the ball the ref blew for a free kick but the decision was appalling. Already picking up a yellow Tony Edwards got another yellow and was sent off. The ref needed to get some glasses as it was the worst decision yet. In the late minutes of the second half number 15 from Skeggy went harshly in on Browny obviously a challenge deserving a red card but to the Town fans disgust he was only shown a yellow. What a Crap ref!!!!!!!

The official Wongers Wally of the Week has got to go to the awful ref with his lets say not the slimmest lino. Thanks to all that came along to support the Town it was a well deserved win!!!

Horncastle Town 1 Skegness Town 0 Lincolnshire League

20-11-2010

By Robin Harrison

Horncastle Town ran out deserving winners in this afternoons Lincolnshire League encounter against high flying Skegness Town despite losing Tony Edwards mid way through the second half to a very controversial referring decision.

Horncastle had the bulk of the possession throughout the game and won through a superbly struck volley from the edge of the penalty area by Matty Lowe.

Despite being reduced down to ten men for the final 20 mins,  plus what appeared to be an exceptionally large amount of added time Horncastle Town held on to record a famous victory!

Wally of the week hmm the men in black or to be more precise the one with the whistle!

Boston United Reserves 5 Horncastle Town 1 Lincolnshire League

13-11-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

The Wongers travelled in numbers to the ground where Gaza once graced the pitch, and like Gaza met in the bar for a few shandy's before KO.  The flattering score is not really a good or true reflection of the game this afternoon.  Town played very well in the first half and looked more like the team at the top of the division.

Town passed the ball well against a very strong United team, Town went close a few times with Flash having a shot cleared off the line.
Scroggsy had very little to do in the opening half but it was the home side who scored with their first real attack on Towns goal.
Half time and yes you know what that means ... BAR !!

On the way the Boston massive tried to give us some stick but like gentlmen we did not retaliate and also they were all under 10 !
Second half and Boston quickly doubled their lead and not long after Town were down to 10
men when Flash was shown a red card for retaliation after a brutal foul by Lurch.

From the resulting free kick Ollie curled the ball into the top corner for a superb goal !

Town tried to come back but found United too strong with the extra man and the game finished 5-1.

Dave and Tom came on as late subs for Gaz and Jamie.
Wongers Wally of the week ....... Could say the ref or the Boston manager who watched the game from the stands a la premiership manager not Lincs league!!! UTW.

Team:Scroggsy, Browny, Matty, Alco, Johno, Jamie, Jacko, Ollie J, Gaz, Flash &  Mickey. Subs: Dave,Tom & Frank.

Ivy Taven 0 Horncastle Town 5 County Cup

06-11-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

This game saw Town march on through to the next round of the County Cup with a convincing win against the Ivy Tavern.  Town started on the offensive from the first whistle seeing Flash test the goalie in the first minute.

With the game only five minutes old Browny broke up the Ivy Tavern play and passed the ball wide to Flash who put over an inviting cross for Tony to score with a diving header. Town were creating plenty of openings and Mickey went close in the 18th minute shooting straight at the keeper.

The wongers soon realised that The Ivy defence had some celebrity look-alikes with their number four passing a resemblance to Bolton's finest, Peter Kaye, and their number two giving a good impression of Caleb (thanks Towny) of Kings of Leon.  Any way back to the game.....Flash again went close as he tried to dink, yes DINK, the ball over the goalie but the ball span wide.  Scroogsy had very little to do first half and did all that was asked in catching the ball and some superb kicking but when the opportunity came to throw it the ball seemed curiously stuck to his gloves!

Town were working the ball well and Caleb was given a torrid time by Matty and Chalky, Flash went close again after a shot on the volley went inches wide after a cross from Chalky.  The last event of the first half was a strike by Jacko that hit the woodwork.  Half time and the Wongers were off............yes to the bar and may I say, also, were the Chairman and Lady chairman...its catching!

The second half began with the Wongers watching from the bar porch and Town again were straight into attack mode after a long........PASS, by Scroggsy saw Flash again go close.
Ivy's Number 6 was shown a yellow card after a foul on the hardworking Chalky.
Town's second goal was scored by Flash who eventually got his reward seeing his right foot shot from the edge of the box evade the diving goalie.

Podge then brought on Dave "I've got new boots " Marshall for Browny who needed to go and find some balls with young Tom!  Again Town pressed forward and Scroggsy was pinpointing the front two with his kicking, the Wongers gave Scroggsy a big cheer when all of a sudden......he threw the ball out to Dave....Scroggsy gave the Wongers...two fingers, but we were sure he had only thrown the ball out once!

Gaz was brought on for Chalky and soon went close with a header and then Flash had another chance after a cross by Mickey was headed into his path by Gaz but Flash was unable to convert.  Podge made his final change bringing on Jamie for Ollie for the last 20 minutes.  Town's third was scored by Flash and I really can't report how, as I was checking my phone for Football results and for this I apologise as I did to Ian and Towny after I informed that Ipswich had gone one up against the Blades.

Now I was really struggling for Wonger Wally of the Week until...........Ivy had a free kick outside the box and in the group of players in the area it was clearly seen that their number 15 HEADBUTTED Matty! So as he did not get anything from the Ref he gets our award.
Tony got Town's fourth after good work by Gaz who won the ball and then Flash put the ball through to Tony.  Tony and Flash are going to be a handful for any defence this season and Flash got his hattrick and Town's fifth after great work between the two strikers.

Great result for Town today and PLEASE can as many supporters as possible turn out next Saturday when the boys are away to local rivals Boston United Reserves, You know it makes sense!!!

Hykeham Town 1 Horncastle Town 0 Lincolnshire League

30-10-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Podge picked a strong team for the trip to Hykeham, which proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Town.  Podge was assisted today in the absence of DJ by Andrew "unleash the beast" Cotton who was soon letting his feelings known to the ref as the game began with Town struggling against a Hykeham side who made life difficult. Within the first 10mins Hykeham had hit the post twice with the second being a class save by Lewis.

Then Hykeham were awarded a penalty for what the ref said was a push by Alco which no-one else saw, even the player who was said to be pushed! Lewis stood tall in-between the sticks and saved the resulting kick and justice was done!!  Hykeham got their goal after 15 minutes, which saw Lewis lobbed from 20 yards.  Town pushed forward and both Chalky and then Tony from a free kick came close.  On 35mins a thundering shot from Ollie from all of 30 yards crashed off of the bar and once again Town were foiled.

Hykeham with their own brand of what can only be described as heavenly football, well I saw the ball go above the clouds at least six times, were still causing Town problems and went on to hit the Town bar after one of their hoofy moves.  Just before the break Town had a blatant penalty shout turned down when Flash was pushed in the back while climbing to head the ball, but the Ref waved play on.  Town came out in the second half trying to play football (one side had to) and soon were creating chances with Tony and Flash causing the Hykeham defence problems.  A free kick by Johno saw Gaz come close with a header but Town were just not getting any breaks today, Flash saw a header just go wide of the goal as Town pressed forward.  Town then had another penalty claim turned down by Cocoa the Clown, sorry meant to say Andy the Ref, when Tony was hauled down in the box.  There was a break in play when Mickey came on for the hard working Gaz which gave the local ducks time to fly over the pitch without the risk of being hit by another
Hykeham punt into the clouds.

Town tried to play some passing football to get through the Hykeham defence whilst their coach could be heard to tell his players " give it a Dink over the top"................ A Dink !!!!
Anyway Town's last real chance of the game was a 30yrd effort by Chalky but it was never going to be our day.

Wonger Wally of the Week was decided as soon as the 10th minute, Andy the Ref who really had a truly awful game and I would think by the end of the game he knew exactly what the Town coaching staff and watching supporters thought of him. RUBBISH! Up the Wongers !!

Grimsby Borough Reserves 2 Horncastle Town 4 Lincolnshire League

16-10-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

The Wongers travelled to Grimsby Borough today where the game was played on a School pitch which wasn't great but beggers cant be choosers!  The starting line up for Town was, Lewis, Browny,Matty, Alco, Johno,Ollie J,Jacko, Gaz,Michael, Tony and Flash. On the bench were Ollie K, Jamie and Frank.  Town started well and immediately started to cause Grimsby problems, so much so that their number 9 went one better than Browny last week by getting booked in under 2 minutes.

Both the impressive Tony and Flash went close in the early part of the first half and the only part Lewis had to play in the half was to race out of his area with a Karate Kid like kick to stop a rare Grimsby attack!

Town pressed forward but was prevented clear chances by a linesman who clearly did not have a clue, even the ref had a word with him telling him to sort it out!  On 40 mins a fine pass by Cromer, almost a forward one, found Michael who delivered a great cross which was met by Flash who headed against the bar.

More and more Grimsby were displaying tactics which can only be described as Filth which  saw their number 8 get booked for yet another late challenge. Just before the break Town broke through again and yet again YODA the linesman put his flag up only to be over ruled by the ref and Tony went on to score.  The whistle went for half time and the ref went off being surrounded by the Grimsby players, the Wongers meanwhile were too busy looking for a pint but to no avail.  Town again started well in the 2nd half and saw Flash make the keeper save well and then an almighty scramble in the Grimsby area when Johno shot and the keeper pushed the ball onto the bar, then Tony headed, Gaz and Ollie also got in on the act, Oo's and Argh's could be heard from the watching Wongers.

The second goal was scored by the returning Flash after good work on the left by Matty, who was coming more into the game causing the Grimsby no 14 (who had the tightest shorts on seen since 1981) all sorts of problems.  Another fine move by Town saw Tony hit the bar after Matty had crossed.  Podge then made two changes bringing on Ollie K and Jamie for Cromer and Michael.

A personal highlight was when the ball came hurtling out of the sky towards the Wongers, Closey thought he had it covered but I dropped a shoulder and back heeled the ball clear, Podge and DJ were open mouthed as the onlookers all said "TOUCH"  Town then took complete control (we thought) when Matty scored after a cross by Jacko.

An injury to our captain marvel Johno meant Frank was introduced to the defence but don’t worry we are 3 up.............. Frank made a couple of surging runs and headed a neat ball through to Tony but............Grimsby got two goals back and neither was down to Lewis even tho he did have a baseball cap on!!

Just as we were starting to say "surely not" Flash broke through and not happy with just rounding the goalie once tried it again, with Tony screaming for the square pass, Flash buried the ball in the net.  Town really should have been out of sight in this game and could have netted ten.

The return of the Wonger Wally of the week saw the award going to........YODA the linesman by far the worst we have seen.

A good run out for Town tonight which saw Podge give some younger players a chance to impress.  Louie was once again in goal and handled whatever was thrown at him with ease.
The game was settled with goals from Tony Edwards with 2 goals the return of Craig Flash Gordon with 2 goals, Tom Sewell and Carl Wilson.

The biggest cheer was for Carl Wilson's Klinsmann style goal celebration but no Wonger Wally of the week ! Great beer tho! Wongers !!!!

Fulbeck United 0  Horncastle Town 4  County Cup

09-10-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

After the controversial last cup match at Long Sutton Podge was looking at settling this game in normal time.  With Scroggsy unavailable Louie was Towns number 1 with Browny back in midfield and Tom Sewell given a start up front alongside Tony Edwards.

The game started with Browny trying to make the biggest impression and this he sure did when after 3 mins 40 he found himself in the ref's book for two challenges (fouls) !  Town initially seemed to struggle to find their usual passing game although having the most possession.
Tom Sewell struck the post of the Fulbeck goal from 20 yards as Town settled.

With 5 mins remaining the ball broke loose in the box and Browny made no mistake as the net rippled.  Louie had nothing to do all half until the last minute when Fulbeck played a ball through and Louie coolly came out of his area collected the ball on to his knee to his chest and passed the ball clear, the watching Wongers cheered with delight !

The 2nd half started with the Wongers watching from the Executive box ( bar) ! Gaz Melia put Town 2 up with a great strike from what looked 20 yards from the steamed up windows of the Exec' box .  Tony Edwards then broke into the box in Towns next attack and was hauled down and the ref pointed to the spot.  Cromer stepped up but had to re-take his kick after initially passing the ball sidewards ! He made no mistake when he was told the ball had to move forward !!!!!!!

Podge then made use of his subs bringing on Jamie for Tiny and then Jacko for Browny then trying to keep it simple Ollie for ........ Ollie !  Louie again with very little to do made a great save scooping the ball out of the danger area and then dummied the resulting ball from the corner.

Town now in complete control had Jacko hit the bar and Jamie finished the rout with Towns 4th.
No Wonger Wally of the week apart from Browny ! 3mins 40 ?????  WONGERS !

Ruston Sports 0  Horncastle Town 2 (aet)

To say this was a one sided game is an understatement! Without playing their best football of the season Town should have been three goals up at half town.

own began the second half trying to play more short passing football and chance after chance went by! Even the watching Wongers and coaching staff were beginning to laugh as the ball just would not go in the net!   Podge made some changes bringing on Steve Brown for Jamie Lamming and Tom Sewell for Gaz Melia.

Extra time began and to be honest the feeling was that it would go to penalties and the fear that Town would lose. But then Podge brought Shelley on for Dave Marshall and within minutes Shelley threaded an inch perfect pass to Tony Edwards who this time made no mistake and buried the ball in the back of the net. Like they say when it rains it pours and within minutes Jacko had made sure of Towns progression to the next round of the cup.

Wonger W***er of the match goes to Ruston's number 8 who they called Campo but was more like Compo who moaned all day to the ref when there was nothing to moan about. So it's Skeg or Boston in the next round and the Wongers know who we want !!!!
Nice pint of Becks at Ruston's and for this we say thank you.

Horncastle Town 3 Heckington United 1

25-09-2010

A Wongers view by Alan Wilkinson

Town gave The Wongers plenty to shout about today with a comfortable win in a game they dominated from the start. First half goals from Matty Low and Tony Edwards gave Town a 2-0 lead although on chances created it could easily
have been 5 or 6. Beer break was followed by much the same in the second half and skipper Jonno made it 3 with an AUDACIOUS free kick from 25 yards out. Heckington got themselves a late consolation just to give the returning Town keeper Scroggs something to moan about.

Wongers Wa**er of The Match was a difficult decision but was finally won by the Heckington no.3 who in order to show off his fully tattooed left arm decided play with one shirt sleeve completely rolled up to his collar - well hard!

Special mention to the excellent stand in barman Pete Nagle who's expertise in pulling a pint was very much appreciated by The Wongers this afternoon - in contrast to the piss poor tea on offer from the new tea bar assistant!
Well done Town! UTW

Horncastle Town 1 Grimsby Boro 1

18-09-2010

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

Another home draw for Town who never really got going in the first half.  Grimsby frustrated Town with a physical game that the ref appeared to be a supporter of as he seemed to let a lot of challenges go without a word .  Grimsby took the lead as a result of Town falling asleep and letting in a weak goal.

It was obvious from the look on Podges face at half time that the boys were in for a bit of a talking to.  Town came back the second half more positive and levelled the score after an "audatious" (thanks Mr Baxter) cross by Tony Edwards for Alco to head the ball into the net.
Special mention to Lewis in goal who had a good solid performance between the sticks .
Wonger Wa**er of the match goes to the Grimsby number 11 who got booked for diving but only got a 5.9 from the watching Wongers !

Long Sutton 1 Horncastle Town 2 (AET)  Lincs Junior Cup

11-09-2010

Report by Travelling Wonger Pete Nagle

Town started the game very well playing some superb fast passing football that Long Sutton really could not live with. Town created chances in the first half but could not make the breakthrough. Early second half pressure paid off when Ollie Cromer Johnson put Town ahea...d. Somehow Town could not punish Long Sutton and paid the price for some poor finishing when the home side equalised. The full time whistle sounded and it was extra time. The sides were still equal when it was half time and then ......... mass confusion ! Someone from Lincs FA was present and informed that the game should have gone straight to penalties. After a long discussion between the officials it was decided that the extra time should continue. It was Town who got the breakthrough with Michael Harness scoring with only a couple of minutes to go ! So Town through to the next round or are they ? If Long Sutton appeal the match may be replayed ! But it's not all bad there is a very nice bar if we have to go back !!!!! Wonger W***er of the match would have gone to Long Sutton's number 11 who appeared to fall over more times than Ann Widdecome will on strickly! But no this weeks award goes to the Ref for not knowing the rules !!!!! A good day out with Town having a healthy away following !
