A Wongers Unofficial View Reports 2011/2012

Skegness Town 1 Horncastle Town 3 Lincolnshire Junior Cup

Round Four

03-12-2011

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

Town roared through to the next round of the cup with a comfortable win at bracing Skegness on Saturday.

Podge made some changes to the side that lost last week with Lewis in goal Dave and Alco is a Wonger in the middle of defence with Johno moving to midfield.

We also saw the return of Chalky on the left and Will up front with Skilly.

... Town settled quickly and they looked a more balanced side than the last few weeks with Chalky causing Skegness problems with his mazy runs and Skilly and Will linking well up front.

Town took the lead with a thundebolt of a shot from Johno that hit the net of the underside of the bar.

Town continued to have the better of the game and were two up when Ollie curled in a free kick that Skilly met with his head that gave the goalie no chance (footage available on the official website, thanks Robin).

So half time and it was off for drink enjoying the fact that Town were leading and playing well.

In the second half Skegness tried to get back in the game but the pairing of Alco is a Wonger and Dave were keeping them at bay along with Matty and Daryl.

Lewis in goal made two crucial saves in the second half and one with his outstretched right arm stopped a certain goal.

Skegness did get back in the game but it was good to see a Town side who recently would have panicked get straight back at Skegness and soon restored their lead with another great strike this time from Daryl.

Town thought they went further ahead when Skilly lobbed the keeper but it was judged to have not crossed the line by the Lino who was 20 yards from the line !

Late substitute appearances by Jamie and Kieron saw Town win the game and progress to the next round.

So all in all a good all-round display from Town and now with a week off with no game next week.

Wonger Wally of the Week...........the Groundsman at Skegness, surely the litter and broken glass can be picked up with small children playing but hats off to whoever makes their programme, superb stuff and well worth 50p.

As always.....just a fans view UTW

Hykeham Town 3 Horncastle Town 0 Lincolnshire League

26-11-2011

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

Town suffered another defeat on a ground which we always seem to struggle on.  Podge fielded a strong looking team with Keith back in goal and Cools and Gaz returning to the team and a change up front saw Kieran starting the game.

Hykeham started the stronger and settled well with the best player being "nobby" (honest) who was causing Town some problems as he seemed to have a free role on the pitch. Hykeham went in front through a soft goal that seem to take ages to trickle into the net, Town then rallied a bit and tried to get back in the game with the Hykeham keeper making two good saves.

But once again Town found themselves really up against it when Hykeham scored again and the Wongers were by now looking forward to half time. The second half saw Town have the majority of the play with Ollie Johnson being the stand out player. For all their possession Town could manage only one real chance which saw Cools test the keeper with a curling free kick. Hykeham broke away and went three up and the game was over as a contest.

Now when choosing Wonger Waly of the Week it was going to go to the Ref who after a Hykeham player had received treatment let him play on without leaving the field (silly rule but a rule,he did this twice). Podge then asked the linesman should the player have left the field and the Football Association Official said ......................"I'm not sure"

Step forward and take a bow Wonger Wally of the Week!

Town are away this Saturday to Skegness Town in the Lincs Junior Cup KO 1.30pm.

Cleethorpes Town 9 Horncastle Town 1 Lincolnshire League

19-11-2011

Att 61

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

This was never going to be an easy game against a Cleethorpes side top of the league with a impressive un-beaten record. Town were in trouble from the kick off and found themselves 2 down within 11 minutes.

After the initial shock Town settled and were seeing alot more of the ball and had a good 20 minutes or so but found it difficult to create any goal scoring chances.

Just as the Wongers were saying it would be good to keep it at 2 nil, Cleethorpes struck again .....twice! The third goal was clearly off side but the officials thought that Cleethorpes needed a helping hand......
So 4 nil down at half time and damage limitation but in the second half the goals kept coming.

Credit to Cleethorpes they are an excellent side and the best I have seen play against Town this season, they have quality all over the pitch and every cross they put in was on target and caused Town problems.

On the plus side it was good to see Gaz back, getting 15 minutes after a few weeks being injured and a first senior goal for Will Carter with Towns only chance of the game.

Wonger Wally of the week, the Ref, not that he made 9 bad decisions for the goals, he just thought It was all about HIM !!

Town got back to winning ways after a close game on the Wong.  Podge welcomed back Ollie fresh and ready to go after his holidays and he was partnered in midfield by Captain Johno.
Town are still missing Flash, Gaz and Browny and
in addition there was no Chalky who was doing his Lovejoy bit and Michael who was elsewhere on a motorbike! In came Shelley at the back alongside Alco is a Wonger, Dave and Darryl.  Jamie and Matty made up the midfield and Will and Skilly up front.

The first half was a tight affair and Town had to work hard against a resilient United side.

The second half saw Town have the edge but Lewie was called upon to make a couple of good saves when United threatened the Town goal. Town had a decent penalty shout turned down even though the majority of the crowd thought it was a stonewaller (always wanted to say that)
The goal came from Matty who gathered the ball on the left and curled a shot from well outside the area over the keeper into the net.

That was enough to win the game and the points were Town's, only downside in the game was a booking for Ollie for a challenge that he was lucky not to see red for.
Wonger Wally of the Week ............Matty ! never tell people when you score a fantastic goal that was being touted as goal of the season .....that you miss hit the ball ! Just too honest ....
Town away next Saturday to Cleethorpes, nothing too difficult there then!

The weekend off did not do Town any favours as they got well beaten by Skeg on the Wong last night.

Podge was still without Flash, Ollie , Gaz and Browny but fielded a side good enough not to get stuffed.

The first half was a dire affair for Town with a woeful display with Skeg cruising and to be honest I was glad I did not see all of the half as the crowd was a thirsty one !

Town improved a little in the second half and Darryl pulled a goal back with a fine header, Town had the opportunity to score two when they were awarded a late penalty but Will hit the post.........just about sums the evening up.

A healthy midweek crowd of 107.

Wonger Wally of the Week or was it Wallies ?

Lincoln Moorlands 0 Horncastle Town 2 Lincolnshire League

29-10-2011

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

Podge again was without several first team players including Flash, Dave, Gaz and of course Frank but will be pleased with coming away from Moorlands with all the points, I know this because he told me in the Bull at way past midnight!

Town returned to Moorlands for the second time this season after playing previously in the cup.

The first half was a scrappy affair with Town struggling to keep he ball down and play their passing game and was to be honest a pretty uneventful 45 minutes of football.

The second half started with Town in a more attacking mood and were creating openings with Chalky making several mazy runs at the Moorlands defence.

Podge then was forced into a change and off came the injured Skilly for Johnny in a like for like swap up front.

The watching Wongers were getting nervous and the "grim reaper" (you know who you are) was back " Moorlands will get one in a minute" ! But Michael was having none of that and coasted over to the left hand side of the penalty box to meet a cross that put Town one up.

Another injury saw Matty limp off to be replaced by everyone's favourite, the one the only CHUCKLE !!!!!!!

Moorlands also made a change bringing on Wonger Wally of the week number 12 who sole mission was to go in late in every challenge he made which really got Michaels back up and wound him up so much...................... he got the ball on the right weaved to the edge of the box and curled a great shot into the top corner of the net and then ran after the Wonger Wally of the week just to ask him what he thought of his goal.

So all the points were Towns, stand out performances were of course Michael with his two goals, Alco is a Wonger was superb at the back and Johnny showed some great touches when he came on.

Roll on next Saturday when Town are back at the Wong facing our old friends, Humbertherm in the cup...................he's shaking hands, he's shaking hands.............

As always only a fans view.

If Town were given a shock by Ruston's earlier in the week, Grimsby gave them a nightmare.  From the first whistle Town looked off the pace and struggled against a good Borough side.  Grimsby Borough's keeper was injured in the warm up but this did not dishearten them as they made the most of a poor Town display.

Grimsby took an early lead and really took the game to Town who found themselves four goals down at half time with Grimsby Borough's third goal being the pick of the bunch.

Podge made changes during the second half with all his available subs being used, those being Ollie, Chalky and Johnny, but to be honest the game was over as a contest.

Let’s hope Town buck their ideas up for a rare away game at Lincoln Moorlands on Saturday.

As always, just a fan's view.

After the delights of Saturday Town were quicky brought down to earth by Rustons at a chilly Wong last night. Podge fielded basically the same team as on Saturday apart from Andy in goal and Cools coming in at left back. Within the first few minutes Town found themselves two goals down and were struggling to put any passes together.

Town got through the first half without Rustons adding to their lead.
Stern words no doubt at the break from Podge as Town came out looking a different side and pressed the visitors from the whistle.

Town got back in the game with a goal from Flash which was richly deserved, Town then saw the return of Ollie into midfield for Jamie who had an eye injury. Town drew level by that man Flash again and went in search of the winner but it was not to be.

A fair result in the end and Rustons played much better than their league position suggests.

Nice to see the younger Wongers enjoying themselves again and adding another film clip!

As always this is only a fan's view! :)

Horncastle Town 2 Boston United 1 Challenge Cup

15-10-2011

Att 148

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

Town are through to the semifinal of the challenge cup after knocking out Boston United Reserves for the second year running. Podge was without several first team regulars and at 11am had only 11 players and all was looking a bit bad. By Kick off Podge had 13 players with Kieron and Harry stepping up into the first team. Boston brought their usual Massive following of ..............none, but it is a long way from the Fens.  Town were up for the game from the first whistle and ran their hearts out for 90 plus minutes.

For a team ravaged with injuries and missing players Town took the lead after a bit of a scramble and it was Kieron that finally put the ball over the line.  Boston hit back after the Ref really got a decision badly wrong which gave Boston the chance of getting back into the game. Ex Town player of 2010 Tony saw himself booked in the first half whilst the other ex Town favorite, Jacko was having a quiet game and really did not look comfortable facing his old team mates.

Early in the second half Tony was sent off for his second bookable offence when he led with his arm catching Johno with his elbow, which started a bit of pushing and shoving on the touchline between a Boston player and DJ, there was really no need!

Glen "Beanie" Maddison, Boston Manager and League Representative manager then really showed his colours by clapping Tony off saying "Well played" and applauding his actions.  Beanie then went on to try and talk his way into the game with the officials being that close to the linesman you would think they were attached. Town got the winning goal after Flash was brought down in the box being the last man and the Boston defender should have been shown a red card.  Flash scored from the spot sending the keeper the wrong way and the watching Wongers into dreamland including the Young Wongers who were dancing in delight.

Town worked so hard through the whole team from Keith in goal and the defence of Dave,Alco, Johno, Matty and Harry then the midfield of Michael, Skilly, Jamie, Kieron and Shelley and Flash and Will up front.  Boston huffed and puffed and to be honest were not good it was a shame watching a class footballer like Jacko in a team that is over physical and   happy to punt the ball up front, come back home Jacko, you know you want to.

Glenn Maddison won Wonger Wally of the week quite easy even Sarge could not take it off him, but at the end of the game he clearly was head and shoulders a Wally.  Glenn thought it would be right to have a go at Johno and which started a melee between the players which resulted in Keith asking Glenn what his problem was and Glenn..........pooing his pants!

Glenn Madison Wally of the week, take a bow and you and your tactics were an embarrassment and apparently the ipod in the Boston dressing room only has one group on it .....ELBOW...........UTW

Lincoln Moorlands 2 Horncastle Town 0 Challenge Cup 1st round

A Wongers Unofficial view by Pete Nagle

17-09-2011

There is to be no repeat of last seasons cup run after Town went down with a wimper against a very poor Moorlands side.
Town were without Matty and Dave but welcomed back Tommy "Lovejoy" Chalk to the side

This was a very poor display by Town who managed just one real effort on goal that hit the bar.

To add to the woes Town lost Daryl during the first half after an awful challenge from the Moorlands captain who clearly elbowed Daryl in the face leaving him poleaxed, did the Ref do anything, well he had a brief chat with the captain and gave him a pat on the back ! So you can guess who got Wally of the week.

I would like to say Town rallied after going behind to two soft goals but they didnt !

Next up is a league home game on Wednesday against Heckington.

Horncastle Town 0 Nettleham 3

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

10-09-2011

A disapointing afternoon and result for Town against a Nettleham side that was well organised.

Town again were without key players Browny, Chalky and Dave but welcomed back Matty and Gaz.

Truth of the matter is Town never really clicked and apart from a 10 minute spell at the start of the first half never really got going with their normal passing game.

Town went in at half time 1 nil down with hopes that the second half would more productive .........but it was not to be.
Nettleham went 2 up with a dubious free kick that was awarded against Johno and then later added a third adding to Town's woes.

On the plus side there was a debut for Rob Rawdon who performed well when called upon from the bench.

Next up at the Wong is Swineshead on Wednesday night at 745, surely we can get back to winning ways to take to Moorlands on Saturday in the cup.

The first 4 games.

A Wongers view by Pete Nagle

03-09-2011

After some computer problems hopefully the usual match reports will be back to normal, so here is a quick summary of the first 4 Town games so far this season.

The first home match was a night game with Town playing hosts to Louth Town  and coming out worthy winners with a 3-1 scoreline. Goals came from Flash with 2  and an Ollie penalty. Town debuts from Daryl who had a great game and Keith  between the sticks who both impressed the watching Wongers, there was also a welcome back to the Wong for Skilly who took his place alongside Flash up front.

The next game was again on the Wong against Hykeham Town a team we never  have much luck against but Town thankfully did not have to rely on Luck.Town again had a comfortable win with Flash putting away all four goals, I would like to describe the goals but missed them all as the Wongers were thirsty and I was on bar duty !

The next two games saw Town away from home the first being at Swineshead with Podge with selection issues with key players Alco,Gaz,Matty and Chalky all missing  so we saw the introduction of Harry, Jonathon and Jamie starting.Town really should have come away from the game with another hatful of goals with the chances that went begging but lady luck was not shining. The game ended one each with Ollie again converting a penalty after Flash was fouled but Town could not hang on and conceded a penalty with three minutes to go.

Saturday saw us travel to Grimsby Borough with fantastic facilities and a little shock  for Closey who was told it would cost us £4 to watch ....£4 !!!!! But no that was the  first team, Town were playing a five minute walk away on common ground not the  plush surroundings of the first team. Again Podge was without key players but Town started well and took the lead  through Michael after a great team move. Town had the better of the play but found themselves level at the break. Things got worse when the home side went into the lead but to their credit Town  rallied and equalised through the impressive Kieron. Town had four minutes to hold on for a point but it was not to be and Grimsby won  the game in the last minute.

Wonger Wally of the week for this week goes to the Ref and his very very young linesmen who made some strange decisions.

Overall the first games have shown that Flash is still lethal in front of goal and Skilly seems to be linking up well with him, good displays by the old firm of Johno, Browny, Ollie and Dave with Daryl looking an excellent addition. Good to see Podge  still having faith in the younger players with Kieron, Harry and Matt all featured in  the opening games.

Next up is a tough test at the Wong on Saturday when Nettleham are the visitors.
