Village
Football in decline!
In January 1927 village football appeared to be in trouble. According to the
News “...the
Town are sending a team to Fulletby to play Scamblesby today
in an endeavour to encourage village football.”
I have news for you HTFC, it worked . The researcher of this article
often goes down to see the village team play 70 years on .
Another interesting connection concerning the two clubs is Reg
Tomlinson was transferred to Grimsby Town from Horncastle Town
in 1930 . In 1933 J. Gowshall was transferred from Scamblesby
F C and Horncastle Town F C Junior to Grimsby Town.
Watch
it lads!
On January 22, 1927 a Horncastle Town player was suspended for 14 days after
making ‘
sarcastic remarks to the referee’.
I am so pleased nothing as serious as this happens these days . If so it
should be referred to the Crown Court .
The
big game
In February 1927 a special article appeared in the News commemorating the
40th anniversary of Town’s
epic F A Cup tie with Aston Villa . According to the snippet ‘a
special train was put on from Horncastle for the cup tie .’ The price ? Five shillings return !
On January 8, 1928 Town’s
proposed match with Lincoln Claytons was postponed so that the
players could see the cup tie between Lincoln City and Preston
North End.
Unholy
Trinity
March 17th 1928 seems to have been a particularly bad day weather wise and
one Gainsborough Trinity Reserves, a professional side, would
want to forget! Here’s
our man ‘Banovallum’
once more catching the flavour of the day.
Before the match the Gainsborough players did not hide their confidence that
they had come just to improve their goal average and would run
up double figures, but the recent match at Boston had
evidently done the Town good, for they gave another good
display on a treacherous turf, and with their usual left-wing
would probably have won by a bigger margin than the odd goal.
After the match the visitors left a none too polite note in their dressing
room , scribbled on a slate. It was a message to the Town
players describing them as a lot of farm servants and warning
them to look for squalls when they visit the Northolme . “We
shall get our own back”
ran one sentence.
A copy of the letter has been sent to the L . F .A. with the request that a
strong referee shall be appointed when the Town visit
Gainsborough on Easter Saturday .
Did you know that in the early days of the English First Division ;
Gainsborough Trinity were one of the teams in it.
What
price Tomlinson
In the 1930s The News reported that former Town player Tomlinson had
scored his first goal for Grimsby Town against Middlesbrough;
similarly , in the same decade there was a lengthy report
Grimsby and Leeds showing interest in Town star George Rudkin.
Busy
time for Town!
In 1933 Town had to play two games in one day, both away from home: in
the afternoon they beat Skegness 2--0 and then won 3--0 at
Ingoldmells.
In 1933 , another fine season for Town, the goals were scored by the
following : Tomlinson, 56; White , 19; Sewell, 15; Rudkin, 14;
Sutton , 9; Johnson, 7; Beddows, 7; Fixter, Hanson, Benton and
Vickers , one each; own goal, one. Town scored a fantastic 132
goals with only 43 conceded .
