Unfortunetly todays away trip against Boston United Reserves was called off at 10am this morning after a pitch inspection was carried out at the Jakemans Stadium that found the pitch was still frozen due to a severe overnight frost.  On health and safety grounds the match was postponed to a new date to be announced in the future.

Lincolnshire Junior Cup Round Four

By Paul Johnson

Town progressed through to the quarter final of the Lincs Junior Cup following a much improved performance at Burgh Road. Town's side had a much better balance than in previous weeks and goals from Chris Johnson, Scott Wilson and Daryl Dunn brought Town a deserved victory.

Manager Paul Johnson was able to recall Lewis Burchnall, Alec Enderby, Tommy Chalk and Will Carter to the starting eleven as Town started the game brightly despite playing into a stiff breeze. Michael Harness and Tommy Chalk were prominent in the wide areas as Town took the game to the home side and with twenty minutes played they took a deserved lead. Ollie Johnson's free-kick was only half cleared and when the ball dropped to Chris Johnson inside the penalty area he shifted the ball onto his right foot before thumping a half volley into the roof of the net.

Skegness were a handful up front but with Dave Marshall and Alec Enderby competing well they were restricted to few scoring opportunities. A free-kick was fired over after Matty Low had been penalised and a clever through ball from Broome created another opportunity that cleared the crossbar.

However, it was Town who continued to look the more threatening and they doubled their advantage on the half hour from another set piece. Ollie Johnson was again the provider as his fine cross was guided back across keeper Maddison by the head of Scott Wilson to end his recent drought in front of goal. Another free-kick from Ollie almost brought a third goal but Michael Harness's low shot drifted just wide of the far post. Town were briefly reduced to ten men when Ollie Johnson was injured but they saw out the remainder of the half reasonably comfortably.

Skegness changed their formation in the second half which enabled them to see more of the ball but it was Town who threatened first when Daryl Dunn's cross from the right was well held by the keeper. Will Carter was leading the line well and when he eluded his marker his low cross just failed to find Daryl Dunn. However, fifteen minutes into the half the home side reduced the deficit with a good goal. Winger Liam Papworth turned Daryl Dunn before advancing into the penalty area before crossing for Lee Orrey to finish from close range.

This gave them real hope but within two minutes Town had re-established their two goal cushion with another fine goal. Scott Wilson held the ball up well before finding Michael Harness out wide and he laid the ball back to Daryl Dunn who hit a superb drive across the keeper into the far corner.

To their credit Skegness continued to push forward and after Lewis Burchnall failed to claim a ball at the edge of his area Michael Howard had a clear sight of goal but Dave Marshall got back to clear. Minutes later the same player was denied again but this time Lewis pulled off an outstanding one handed save to repel the danger. Although Town had more defending to do in the second half they always looked dangerous going forward. Michael Harness's cross caused confusion but neither Alec Enderby or Will Carter could capitalise. Will then headed a far post cross back across goal for Scott Wilson but he was unable to turn the ball in. Scott then did well to turn a defender inside the penalty area but he chose to shoot from a narrow angle when Michael Harness and Tommy Chalk were better placed.

Jamie Lamming and Kieran Hotchin were both introduced as Town looked to consolidate their position and Lewis Burchnall's low fingertip save ensured there was to be no nervy finish. Scott Wilson was adamant he had added a fourth goal and his second when he lobbed the keeper but the ball was hacked off the goal line by Lewis Cartwright.

The final whistle ended a very satisfying ninety minutes from Town who played some decent football throughout despite the continued absence of Craig Gordon, Gareth Melia and Steve Brown. Lewis Burchnall did well behind a solid back four with Matty Low and Alec Enderby having fine games. Tommy Chalk provided much needed balance on the left and Ollie Johnson and his namesake Chris saw a lot of the ball in midfield. Further forward Scott Wilson and Will Carter combined well with Will leading the line well and linking the play intelligently. Whilst there is still room for further improvement Town will be pleased to have reversed the fortunes of recent weeks.

Town have no game this coming Saturday but return to action in a fortnights time at Boston Utd Reserves - kick-off 2pm.

North Hykeham Town 3 Horncastle Town 0 Lincolnshire League

26-11-2011

By Paul Johnson

Despite a much improved showing from last week, Town had nothing to show for their efforts against a useful Hykeham side. The margin of victory was harsh on Town who enjoyed a lot of possession throughout the game but individual errors combined with the lack of a cutting egde in the final third were to prove their undoing.

The side showed a number of changes from last week with Keith Jones, Andy Cooling, Gareth Melia and Kieran Hotchin all restored to the starting line-up. Town were playing into a strong wind in the first half but they started confidently and were rarely troubled in the opening minutes. The back four were looking solid with Dave Marshall dominant in the air but with twenty five minutes gone they conceded a poor goal. A weak challenge on the edge of the box was brushed aside and although their winger struck the ball relatively weakly, keeper Keith Jones was unable to prevent it going into the net.

Town had barely recovered when they concede a second goal moments later. A corner from the right was half cleared by Andy Cooling but when the ball was returned into the box their striker got up well to convert from close range. To their credit Town responded positively and Scott Wilson saw his shot deflected wide after a clever turn. Ollie Johnson's free-kick was then well saved by the keeper and Scott Wilson just failed to get in a shot after good work from Kieran Hotchin. With the half drawing to a close Scott had another opportunity after he was picked out by Michael Harness but he sliced his shot wide.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, Town completely dominated proceedings with Ollie Johnson prominent in midfield. Matty Low was a constant threat down the left, but with Hykeham happy to sit on their lead and play a containing game, it was difficult for Town to break them down.

Andy Coolings well struck free-kick was superbly saved by the keeper and Scott Wilson was unlucky to see his effort ruled out for offside. However, on too many occasions, Town failed to test the keeper when they had opportunities and despite their territorial advantage, they created little by way of clear scoring opportunities.

Little was seen of Hykeham as an attacking force in the second half with Chris Johnson in fine form at the back and when Dave Marshall headed over an Andy Cooling corner with ten minutes to go, Town's fate was sealed. There was just time for Hykeham to add a third goal in the final moments when a cross from the left was prodded past Keith Jones from close range. Gareth Melia's late header from a fine Jamie Lamming cross brought no consolation as the keeper saved comfortably.

Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping for a change in fortune this Saturday when Town travel to play neighbours Skegness Town in the Lincs Junior Cup. Kick-off 1.30pm.

By Paul Johnson

This was a disastrous afternoon for Town as they capitulated weakly against the current league leaders. Whilst there was no doubting the quality of the opposition, the final score line was nothing short of an embarrassment and Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping for a positive response this coming weekend.

In addition to long term absentee Steve Brown, Town were without the services of Craig Gordon, Tommy Chalk, Alec Enderby and Jonathon Seymour with Gareth Melia only fit enough to sit on the bench. However, the eleven that started have all played regular Lincs League football and they will have been desperately disappointed with their efforts.

Manager Paul Johnson elected for a 4-5-1 formation with Will Carter asked to operate as a lone striker with Michael Harness and Matty Low providing width outside of Scott Wilson, Jamie Lamming and Ollie Johnson. The back four of Daryl Dunn, Dave Marshall, Chris Johnson and Luke Shelbourn would have been expecting a tough afternoon and despite conceding nine goals keeper Lewis Burchnall could do little with the goals that went past him at regular intervals.

Town knew they had to start strongly but as has been the case too often in recent weeks, they conceded early in the game and never really recovered. The home side were two up inside ten minutes as Town failed to get to the pace of the game set by the hosts. A cross from the left was volleyed in at the far post inside five minutes and shortly afterwards a free-kick was headed past a helpless Burchnall from close range.

To their credit Town did respond and played well for the next thirty five minutes. They played some decent football at times but found it difficult to break down a resilient Cleethorpes back line.

With half-time approaching Town would have been satisfied to have gone down just two goals in arrears but as the game entered added time a left wing cross was turned in from close range with Town’s players looking in vain for the assistants flag. Moments later a quick throw caught Town flat footed at the back and a fourth goal was inevitable. Town immediately reduced the deficit when Will Carter turned the ball in after the keeper had spilled a Luke Shelbourn cross.

Town knew it was vital that they started the second half well but yet again they conceded early when a corner was only half cleared. Worse was to follow when Scott Wilson’s pass to Will Carter was intercepted and Cleethorpes broke through a static Town midfield to add a sixth goal. Within minutes a free header from a free-kick brought Cleethorpes their third goal in ten minutes as Town were all at sea.

By now Town were totally demoralised and substitutes Gareth Melia and Dave Anderson were introduced midway through the half. Town continued to compete but Cleethorpes were attacking at will and when Lewis Burchnall went up with their striker to challenge for a high ball the loose ball was rolled into the empty net for the home side’s eighth goal.

A late goal condemned Town to their heaviest defeat for many years and the players were relieved to hear the final whistle. Whilst it was always going to be a tough ask to go to a side that have been unbeaten in a year, Town should have been able to give a much better account of themselves and the margin of defeat was nothing short of humiliating.

There were few positives to take from the game but it was pleasing that Will Carter got his first goal in the Lincs League. Dave Marshall also did well despite turning his ankle in the warm-up and Ollie Johnson showed some nice touches in a game when Town produced too little of any real quality. Manager Paul Johnson may well concede that in hindsight the 4-5-1 formation did not work on the day but Town’s players will be the first to admit that they did not do themselves justice.

Cleethorpes will certainly take some stopping in their quest for the title but Town need to be able to make it much harder for teams to get three points and at the moment they are guilty of conceding far too many goals when they are being beaten.

Despite their obvious disappointment, the attitude of the players after the game was excellent and suggested that they are determined to work hard to turn things round. Whilst Saturday’s visit to an improving Hykeham represents another difficult fixture, Town will be hoping to put in a much improved display.

Town side: Lewis Burchnall, Daryl Dunn, Luke Shelbourn, Dave Marshall (Gareth Melia), Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming (Dave Anderson), Will Carter, Scott Wilson, Matty Low.

Luke Mascall scored four as Cleethorpes Town romped to a 9-1 victory over Horncastle Town at the Stamford Club, in a match sponsored by Linden Homes and BJB Lift Trucks.

Renzie Lobendhan, Brody Robertson and Richard Peck also got on the score sheet for the Owls while Callum Day got a late brace to sew up a convincing win.

Andy Liddle was keen to see a reaction the Owls’ disappointing 1-1 draw at Lincoln United Reserves in midweek, and made three changes to the team that started that game – Peck, Matthew Coleman and Luke Neul all earning a recall.

It was clear from kick-off that Cleethorpes were determined to bounce back with a win, Brody Robertson seeing an acrobatic effort cleared off the line after just two minutes.

The deadlock was broken after six minutes when sustained Owls pressure led to Luke Mascall volleying in from inside the six-yard box after a pinpoint cross from the in-form Lewis Wilson.

Five minutes later that advantage was doubled. This time Michael Steer, who made his comeback from injury against the Whites on Wednesday, was the provider, dropping a free-kick in the most dangerous of areas where Mascall could nod home.

Horncastle, who had brought with them a decent following, were seeing a fair amount of the ball but seemed to lack the quality in the final third – a pull-back from Matthew Low after a Tommi Wright slip evaded his team mates.

Wright was in the thick of the action again after 39 minutes. He was slipped in by Neul down the right before curling the ball back across goal to the advancing Lobendhan. The midfielder showed great technique to strike the ball first time on the volley but it ricocheted off the post and away.

Two goals just before half-time effectively secured the points for the Owls. First, Mascall completed his hat-trick with a simple tap-in, despite suspicions of offside, before Lobendhan poked home from inside the area to add a fourth.

Scott Drury’s uncharacteristic howler on the stroke of half-time, which allowed William Carter to tap in to an empty net, was of little consolation to an overwhelmed Horncastle.

There was no easing up from the home side in the second half. Within five minutes of the restart, Mascall showed his class to bend an exquisite fifth.

From the left hand side of the penalty area, he made half a yard of room for himself before curling a left-footed effort into the top right hand corner of the goal to collect his eighth of the season.

Five became six a couple of minutes later with Brodie Robertson tapping into an empty net after good wing work from Wilson.

With 35 minutes still to play, Cleethorpes found themselves 7-1 up. From a corner, Richard Peck was left unmarked in the Horncastle area and he powerfully headed into the back of the net.

Manager Liddle had the luxury of introducing the predatory pairing of Callum Day and Luke Todd after an hour, with Mascall and Robertson earning a rest.

The match was subdued from that point onwards though, with a Todd placed effort from the edge of the area after 67 minutes the closest he came to scoring.

His strike partner though finished the game with two goals – his first ones for Cleethorpes. He took advantage of some suspect goalkeeping from Lewis Bucknall for his first, before he stepped up to convert a penalty after being brought down by Bucknall in the closing stages.

Andy Liddle’s men will be hoping the goals will continue to flow when Lincoln Moorlands Railway Reserves visit the Stamford Club next weekend.

This was a vastly improved performance from Town who deservedly took all three points to bounce back from the disappointment of Wednesday night. Whilst it was a tight game throughout, Town created the better opportunities and a superb strike from Matty Low late in the game was enough to secure the points.

Manager Paul Johnson made several changes from Wednesday with Lewis Burchnall, Daryl Dunn, Luke Shelbourn and Will Carter included from the start. There was also a welcome return from Ollie Johnson who partnered Chris Johnson in the centre of midfield. The absence of Michael Harness and Tommy Chalk meant that Jamie Lamming and Matty Low were deployed in wide areas and both did well as Town looked to gain the initiative in the early stages.

The first half was very tight with little between the sides but Town were looking much more solid defensively. Dave Marshall and Alec Enderby both played well at the heart of the defence throughout and they were ably assisted by Luke Shelbourn and Daryl Dunn who had fine games with Daryl outstanding at right-back. Will Carter and Scott Wilson combined well up front and when they linked up to play in Chris Johnson his low shot was somehow scrambled clear. Jamie Lamming then fired wide after great work from Matty Low and Alec Enderby headed a Lamming corner just over the upright.

The visitors were lively up front and keeper Lewis Burchnall pulled off a fine save from a close range header. There were further concerns when Town failed to react to a loose ball after Luke Shelbourn had done well but a fierce shot deflected just wide of the upright. Luke then did well further forward as his cross caused confusion in the visitors defence but the game remained goalless at half-time.

There was still little to choose between the sides but Town were keeping possession well when they had the opportunity and with Matty Low's pace a constant threat they looked the more likely of the sides to make the break through. Luke Shelbourn and Will Carter both went close with headers as Town pressed but midway through the half the best opportunity fell to Scott Wilson after good work from Will Carter but Scott fired just wide of the far post. Kieran Hotchin and Jonathon Seymour were both introduced in the final twenty minutes as Town looked to push for a winner but it took a great fingertip save from Lewis Burchnall to maintain parity as Lincoln Utd broke clear. Ollie Johnson then fired a free-kick just over after Jonathon Seymour had been fouled but with ten minutes remaining Matty Low struck the decisive goal.

Daryl Dunn again did well and his crossfield pass found Matty who cut inside his marker before drifting a great shot over the keeper who had avanced off his goal-line. This was no more than Town deserved but they had to hang on in a nervy finish as Lincoln Utd threw players forward and won a series of corners. With time running out they put a final ball into the box which was headed goalwards but Jonathon Seymour had stayed on his near post and he was able to head the ball clear.

Whilst further improvement is still required, Town did well given the absence of several players yet again owing to injury and unavailability but Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping that they are soon all available as Town look to consolidate their position in the table.

This coming Saturday Town face a very difficult game against league leaders Cleethorpes Town.

Despite again being without several key players, this was a really poor performance from Town. Defensive lapses gifted the visitors goals at important stages of the game and with Town's passing and decision making poor throughout the result was an inevitability.

Manager Paul Johnson emphasised the importance of a good start but his words went unheeded as Town conceded within the first five minutes. The decision to award a free-kick against Jack Baxter seemed harsh but when a low ball in was somehow allowed to drift beyond the far post the incoming striker rolled a shot beyond keeper Keith Jones into the far corner.

Town's defensive frailties could have been punished further had the visitors not missed two good opportunities but Town did put up some brief resistance and when Michael Harness delivered a superb ball from the right Jonathon Seymour should have scored but he directed his header just wide.

Within minutes Skegness had doubled their advantage with Town again architects of their own downfall. Keith Jones's throw put Tommy Chalk under pressure and his when attempted clearance fell to a Skegness striker the resulting shot took a wicked bounce over a helpless Jones in Town's goal.

With a two goal deficit to claw back, Town knew they needed to start the second half solidly but when a corner was only half cleared, the loose ball was poked home through a crowd of players to give the visitors an unassailable lead. The introduction of substitute Will Carter did improve things for Town and he led the line well but when more poor defending allowed Skegness to add a fourth goal midway through the half Town's misery was compounded.

To their credit Town did rally towards the end and when Michael Harness's corner was handled Town were awarded a penalty. With regular takers Ollie Johnson and Craig Gordon unavailable, Will Carter stepped forward but his low shot was pushed onto the post by the keeper. This summed up Town's evening but they did eventually pull a goal back when Keith Jones ran upfield to touch a free-kick to Michael Harness and his cross was headed into the net by Daryl Dunn for his first goal of the season.

The final whistle ended a desperately disappointing evening for Town and they know only too well that they will have to improve considerably when they entertain Lincoln Utd Reserves on Saturday - kick-off 3pm.

Town side: Keith Jones, Dave Marshall, Matty Low (Daryl Dunn), Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Jack Baxter, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming (Will Carter), Jonathon Seymour, Scott Wilson (Matt Simmons), Tommy Chalk.

Town will have been very satisfied with what in the end was a deserved three points but will be only too aware that performances will need to improve over the forthcoming weeks. A brace of goals from the in-form Michael Harness proved decisive in the end but for long periods Town were frustrated by their inability to make the all important breakthrough.

Ollie Johnson, Tommy Chalk, Daryl Dunn and Andy Cooling all returned to the starting line-up but the absence of Gareth Melia, Dave Marshall, Craig Gordon and Steve Brown meant that Town were again missing key players. However, Town started reasonably well and were enjoying a lot of possession in the early stages. They retained the ball well in the middle third of the pitch but too often the final ball was lacking in quality.

As a consequence, Town failed to create any real scoring opportunities in an uneventful first half. The closest they came to scoring was a Michael Harness shot that the keeper saved with his legs. Defensively, Town were relatively untroubled with keeper Lewis Burchnall rarely called upon in the opening half.

The second half was much improved as Town began to move the ball with more purpose. An early run from Scott Wilson saw him engineer a scoring opportunity but his effort was saved and the follow up from Michael Harness cleared off the line. Will Carter then fired a left footed shot just wide and Ollie Johnson's free-kick was deflected over with the keeper beaten.

Tommy Chalk was getting forward with greater regularity and he tried his luck from range on a couple of occasions but just missed the target. Town then had a great chance to take the lead when Will Carter laid the ball back to Chris Johnson but his close range volley went over the bar.

Chris and Alec Enderby were looking very solid at the heart of Town's defence whenever Moorlands broke forward but Town did survive a scare midway through the half when Daryl Dunn tangled with their centre forward inside the box but the referee turned down the home sides appeals for a penalty.

The introduction of substitute Jonathon Seymour with twenty five minutes to go proved significant as he made a real impact. Having gone close with a volleyed effort from a Michael Harness cross, John was involved in Town's opening goal. Tommy Chalk drifted to the right and when his cross was flicked to the back post by John, Michael Harness ran in and finished unerringly with a low shot into the far corner. Town almost added a second goal moments later when Tommy Chalk's fine cross found Will Carter but his header was comfortably saved by the keeper.

Jack Marshall then replaced the struggling Matty Low as Town looked to consolidate their position and all three points were secured five minutes from time when Michael scored a magnificent second goal.

Having received a pass from Daryl Dunn, Michael turned cleverly to beat his marker before cutting inside and unleashing a tremendous shot that went in off the far post. This was no more then he deserved because he was always looking the most dangerous player on the pitch.

Town saw out the final moments with relative ease and could be satisfied with their efforts in the second half. Of concern to manager Paul Johnson will be the injuries sustained by Scott Wilson, Matty Low and Ollie Johnson, with Ollie likely to be side lined for a number of weeks.

This coming Saturday Town are in action against Humbertherm in the Lincs Junior Cup - kick-off on The Wong is at 1.30pm.

Town side: Lewis Burchnall, Daryl Dunn, Andy Cooling, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Tommy Chalk, Will Carter, Scott Wilson (Jonathon Seymour), Matty Low (Jack Marshall). Subs: Jamie Lamming

Town suffered a heavy home defeat against a strong Grimsby Boro side who were quicker and stronger in every department. The visitors had established a four goal lead before half-time and if Town can take anything positive from the game it was their spirited second half showing during which they could have reduced the deficit. Nevertheless, the visitors were worthy winners but the continued unavailability of several key players is starting to have a real impact and manager Paul Johnson will be hoping to have them back as soon as possible.

Steve Brown, Dave Marshall, Keith Jones, Gaz Melia and Harry Hinkley were all absentees and their unavailability was compounded by the manager's decision to keep Tommy Chalk and Ollie Johnson on the bench. This soon proved to be a poor decision as Town's inexperienced side struggled to compete against a sharp Grimsby Boro side. They dominated the early stages of the game and it was no surprise when they took an early lead. Chris Johnson's poor control lead to a corner and although the resulting ball in was partially cleared by Kieran Hotchin, keeper Lewis Burchnall was totally exposed as the ball was fired into the net.

Town rarely threatened in the first half although Will Carter did well with the limited service he got. Michael Harness did his best to make things happen but Town failed to make any real impression and top scorer Craig Gordon was a virtual spectator up front. The away side doubled their advantage from the penalty spot after Michael Harness was penalised and they held onto their lead with ease. They dominated the remainder of the half but with half-time approaching Town were still in the game and would have hoped to keep the deficit to two goals.

However, two goals in the final moments of the half effectively killed the game as a contest. Firstly a long range effort deceived keeper Burchnall, and moments later another well struck shot came back of Lewis before being turned in from close range.

To Town's credit, they worked hard in the second period to ensure they did not concede any further goals but in truth the visitors seemed happy to settle for their margin of victory. Both Michael Harness and Craig Gordon went close as Town dominated possession but it was really an exercise in damage limitation as Town looked to restore some pride. The introduction of Tommy Chalk and Jonathon Seymour certainly livened things up but the result was a formality and Town will be hoping to give a much better account of themselves when they visit Lincoln Moorlands on Saturday.

On a positive note, youngsters Kieran Hotchin and Matt Simmons were again a part of the first team squad with Matt doing well on his full first team debut. Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping that Tommy Chalk and Ollie Johnson will both be fit to start on Saturday and Daryl Dunn should also be available for selection. Kick-off at Moorlands is 3pm.

Town side: Lewis Burchnall, Matt Simmons, Matty Low, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Will Carter, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming (Tommy Chalk), Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson (Ollie Johnson), Kieran Hotchin (Jonathon Seymour).

Despite dropping two points at home, Town will have been relieved to have gotten something from the game given that they were two goals down inside five minutes. Early indecision from Andy Money in Town's goals proved costly in the opening moments as Rustons took the lead and worse was to follow inside two minutes as Town failed to clear a corner and a low shot went in off the far post to give the visitors the perfect start.

Town were visibly shocked and although they dominated possession for the remainder of the half they rarely produced enough quality in the final third to trouble a determined Rustons defence. Too often passes went astray or poor decisions were made as Town's play lacked any fluency with only Matty Low offering any real threat.

Will Carter saw his low shot saved after an Andy Cooling free-kick was played to him by Alec Enderby and Craig Gordon's lob dropped just wide following good work from Michael Harness. Craig then saw his free-kick well saved after Matty Low had been fouled just outside the area.

Rustons offered little attacking threat but when their right winger found space he delivered a great ball to the far post that just eluded the centre forward. Town knew they would have to improve considerably after the break and to their credit their general play was much improved. The midfield pairing of Jamie Lamming and Scott Wilson were getting on the ball and when Scott pulled the ball back from the right Craig Gordon fired over. Will Carter then saw his header saved following a fine cross from Dave Marshall who had another decent game.

Town needed a goal to give themselves a chance of salvaging something and it duly arrived through a familiar source with an hour played. There looked to be nothing on when Craig Gordon received the ball twenty five yards out but his clever chip deceived the keeper and dropped into the far corner. This gave Town the lift they needed and Craig almost added a second when his first time shot shaved the far post after neat work from Dave Marshall. Ollie Johnson and Harry Hinkley were introduced as Town looked to press forward at every opportunity and Harry again gave a good account of himself. Michael Harness looked certain to equalise when he met a Scott Wilson cross on the volley but the keeper somehow kept the ball out. Michael again went close following an excellent turn on the edge of the box and it looked as though Town were going to be frustrated but with ten minutes remaining they drew level. Harry Hinklet advanced from the back before playing a fine ball forward and when it was turned into the path of Craig Gordon he fired unerringly into the far corner.

At this stage there looked to be only one winner but Rustons almost snatched a late goal when a free-kick clipped the outside of the post with keeper Andy Money at full stretch. With time running out Matty Low saw his effort blocked as Town continued to press and in the final seconds Craig Gordon held off a defender before driving the ball just over from a tight angle.

At the end of the ninety minutes a draw was probably a fair result and although Town dominated proceedings after a dreadful start, the visitors were deserving of a point. Manager Paul Johnson was disappointed with his sides’ first half showing but pleased with their response after half-time and the character shown by the players to come back from a two goal deficit.

Boston United Reserves tumbled off the Challenge Cup trail after losing 2-1 to Horncastle Town on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Kieron Hotchin and Craig Gordon handed the Wongers a narrow success in the second round clash.

United’s Alex Thompson was on target for the Pilgrims, but the visitors were dumped out of the cup having played more than half-an-hour with 10 men following the dismissal of former Horncastle favourite Tony Edwards.

HOTCHIN had handed Horncastle a 10th minute lead at The Wong, but the Pilgrims were back on level terms nine minutes before half-time through THOMPSON.

Edwards was handed his second yellow card 10 minutes into the second period following a clash with former team-mate Chris Johnson.

Town took full advantage and GORDON fired home from the spot to send Horncastle through into the semi-finals alongside Cleethorpes Town, Swineshead Institute and Grimsby Borough Reserves.

Boston (4-4-2): Andy Hewitt; Scott Lowman (Mitch Eustace 79), Scott Dawson, Matt Price, Jason Field; Liam Ogden, Alex Thompson (Nick Bishop 70), Richard Jackson, Steve Lovett (Stuart Whitaker 60); Tom Sergeant, Tony Edwards.

Town secured a place in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup following an outstanding performance against a strong Boston Utd side. Despite being without several key players, Town's reshuffled line-up battled superbly and were fully deserving of their victory that came courtesy of goals from Kieran Hotchin and a late Craig Gordon penalty.

Town started strongly with the unfamiliar midfield pairing of Jamie Lamming and Scott Wilson working very effectively. Craig Gordon was partnered by Will Carter up front and they caused the Boston defence untold problems in the early stages. It was no surprise when Town took the lead after ten minutes after good work from Scott Wilson. His threaded pass picked out Will Carter and although his effort was saved, the loose ball fell to Kieran Hotchin and he rolled the ball into the far corner despite the desperate efforts of a Boston defender to clear the ball.

This clearly filled Town with confidence and they had several opportunities to extend their lead. Craig Gordon saw his goalbound effort blocked after great work from Matty Low and Michael Harness and Craig then lifted the ball just wide after being picked out by another fine ball from Michael. Craig the turned provider as he set up Will Carter but his shot lacked sufficient power to trouble the keeper. However, the best chance fell to scorer Hotchin after he found space on the left and he did everything right but his curling effort just missed the far post.

This seemed to produce a response from the visitors and within five minutes they had equalised with their first meaningful effort on goal. A cross from the left was only half cleared to Alex Thompson on the edge of the area and his low shot was too good for an unsighted Keith Jones in Town's goal. Boston went on to dominate proceedings for the remainder of the half but Town defended resolutely with Alec Enderby and Chris Johnson in fine form. They kept Boston's front pairing of Tony Edwards and Tom Sargent relatively quiet but Liam Ogden proved a real handful and his battle with Matty Low was one of the highlights of the game. Keeper Keith Jones pulled off two fine saves to keep the scores level at the break but Town would have been forgiven for fearing the worst given the depleted nature of their squad.

However, they dug in and played some decent football in the second period and restricted Boston to very few clear scoring opportunities with Dave Marshall outstanding at the heart of the defence. Alec Enderby had to go off at half-time and he was replaced by Harry Hinkley with Dave reverting to centre-half. Both had fine games with Harry using the ball intelligently and finding Michael Harness at every opportunity.

Jamie Lamming and Scott Wilson continued to work tirelessly in midfield and it was Town who looked the more threatening whenever they got forward. Michael Harness's driven cross just eluded the tiring Keran Hotchin and with thirty minutes remaining he was replaced by Luke Shelbourn. Craig Gordon then fired just wide of the far post as Town continued to press. Moments later Boston were reduced to ten men when ex-Town striker Tony Edwards was dismissed for a second bookable offence after his flailing arm caught Town skipper Chris Johnson in the face.

With twenty five minutes remaining the game opened up as both sides looked for a winning goal. Keith Jones pulled off another fine diving save and a close range header went just over as Boston pushed forward. At the other end Michael Harness's free-kick was headed just wide by Luke Shelbourn as Town continued to pose a threat in the final third. Town were defending superbly and when they broke forward Michael Harness and Craig Gordon combined well before Craig saw his close range effort well saved. With time running out the last thing Town wanted was extra-time and when Craig Gordon was hauled down in the penalty area the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot with Craig Gordon stepping forward to despatch the ball with ease.

This led to a frantic last few minutes as Boston threw players forward but it was Town who created the clearer chances on the break and in the final seconds Craig Gordon broke away down the right before cutting in and squaring the ball to Will Carter but his effort was scrambled clear as the referee blew for full-time.

This brought to an end an absorbing contest in front of a large crowd with Town deserving winners on the day. The defence was outstanding throughout in front of keeper Keith Jones who had a fine game. Jamie Lamming had his best game of the season alongside Scott Wilson and they did extremely well in the centre of the park. Will Carter and Craig Gordon asked questions of an experienced Boston defence throughout and it was a shame that Will could not cap his performance with a goal.

Town return to league action this coming Wednesday when they entertain Ruston Sports on The Wong - kick-off 7.45pm.

Town side:  Keith Jones, Dave Marshall, Matty Low, Alec Enderby (Harry Hinkley), Chris Johnson, Will Carter, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming, Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson, Kieran Hotchin (Luke Shelbourn).

Horncastle Town 2 Skegness United 6 Lincolnshire League

By Paul Johnson

Town's recent good run of results that had taken them up to third in the table came to an end against a very strong Skegness United side. Whilst the margin of victory may have been somewhat harsh on Town there was no denying that the better side won on the night.

Town's starting eleven was still missing Ollie Johnson, Steve Brown, Craig Gordon and Tommy Chalk and although both Gareth Melia and Keith Jones were restored to the starting line-up Town were unable to prevent the visitors from taking all three points.

However, Town performed well in the first half after Skegness United dominated the opening fifteen minutes which saw them take a deserved lead when Town failed to clear a corner. Town's response was very positive and they levelled almost immediately when Dave Marshall picked out Michael Harness and his early cross was headed past the keeper by the in-form Scott Wilson.

Scott was a handful all night and he linked well with Will Carter as Town enjoyed their best spell of the game. Matty Low and Michael Harness were both causing problems for the opposing full-backs and Michael twice created an opening for himself but his shots failed to trouble the keeper. Matty Low's low cross just failed to reach Will Carter as Town pressed but they had to remain alert at the back as the visitors broke with pace on several occasions.

A desperate challenge from Chris Johnson just cleared the danger and Alec Enderby put in a number of solid challenges as Town worked hard to stay on level terms. However, their hard work was undone just before the break in unfortunate circumstances. Alec Enderby seemed to be totally in control of the situation at the back but he tried to shepherd the ball out of play and when he was dispossessed on the byline a second goal for the visitors was inevitable.

This was a real body blow to Town who had played well throughout the first half but any chance they had of getting back into the game was effectively ended within ten minutes of the restart. Firstly a free-kick was only half cleared by Daryl Dunn and the loose ball was hammered past Keith Jones in Town's goal. Minutes later a headed clearance left their striker in the clear and although Keith saved the initial shot with his legs the loose ball fell kindly to an incoming player who scored with ease.

Jack Baxter replaced the unlucky Gareth Melia who suffered a recurrence of his injury with thirty minutes remaining. Jamie Lamming and Tom Phillips were also introduced in place of Daryl Dunn and Dave Marshall and to their credit Town did pull a goal back when Jack Baxter ran onto Michael Harness's flick before lifting the ball over the keeper and into the net. Unfortunately this was sandwiched between the fifth and sixth goals from the opposition but the attitude of the Town players was commendable as they continued to work hard.

At the end of the game there was no denying that the better side won but a poor start to the second half was to prove costly and quickly undid a lot of good work in the first half. The worrying thing for Manager Paul Johnson will be the injury to Gareth Melia and the knocks sustained by Daryl Dunn and Alec Enderby that will hopefully not prove too serious. The crippling injury list is proving really costly but hopefully some key players will return to full fitness over the next two to three weeks.

This coming Saturday Town entertain Boston United Reserves on The Wong in the Challenge Cup - kick-off 2.30pm.

Town side: Keith Jones, Daryl Dunn (Jamie Lamming), Andy Cooling, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Dave Marshall (Tom Phillips), Michael Harness, Gareth Melia (Jack Baxter), Will Carter, Scott Wilson, Matty Low. Subs: Lewis Burchnall

Despite not being able to field a team the previous Saturday, Humbertherm arrived at The Wong with a full quota of players for this midweek fixture. Town were still without the services of Tommy Chalk, Ollie Johnson, Steve Brown and Gareth Melia and the late withdrawal of top scorer Craig Gordon through illness meant a reshuffle to the starting eleven. Daryl Dunn and Andy Cooling were deployed at full-back, with Dave Marshall moving forward into midfield alongside Jamie Lamming and Will Carter accompanying Scott Wilson in attack.

The conditions were far from ideal with a strong wind gusting across the pitch making it difficult for both sides but a brace of goals from Scott Wilson ultimately proved decisive in a reasonable game given the conditions. There were few clear scoring opportunities in the first half but Town will feel they should have perhaps made more of the possession they enjoyed. Andy Cooling was very assured at full-back and he instigated a lot of Town attacks with the quality of his passing. Matty Low and Michael Harness both posed a threat wide but it was Humbertherm who almost took the lead when their centre forward outpaced Alec Enderby before firing over.

Dave Marshall curled a left footed effort over after advancing forward and Will Carter just failed to reach Michael Harness's driven cross. Matty Low then fired just wide of the upright following a dtermined run and Michael Harness drew a superb save from the keeper after good work from Dave Marshall. Town continued to press and Will Carter did well to direct the ball on target but the keeper again cleared the danger.

With the half drawing to a close Humbertherm gave warning that they were very much in the game when a dipping shot was beaten away by an alert Lewis Burchnall in Town's goal. Town were disappointed to go in on level terms at the break but an improved showing in the second half was to bring its rewards.

Scott Wilson had a fine second half and he forced an early save from the keeper after good link up play with Will Carter. Will then failed to get in a shot after good work down the left from Matty low but with an hour gone Town took a deserved lead. Michael Harness was again the architect as he broke clear on the right before squaring the ball for Scott Wilson to turn in at the far post. Tom Phillips replaced Jamie Lamming as Town looked to force home their advantage and Michael Harness was unlucky not to add a second when his shot beat the keeper but was deflected onto the underside of the bar before being scrambled away.

Town's defence was solid throughout with Alec Enderby and Chris Johnson in fine form but they did survive a scare when a corner caused confusion in the penalty area but Daryl Dunn did well to poke the ball clear. Town responded positively and when Scott Wilson got his head to a Michael Harness cross the ball was deflected just over the crossbar. Town continued to press and Scott should have wrapped the game up with fifteen minutes remaining but his close range effort was smothered by the keeper after more good work from Michael Harness.

With time running out, Town were hoping that they would not regret their missed opportunities but with the final kick of the game Scott Wilson added his and Town's second. A low shot from Michael Harness looked to be heading for the far corner but Scott made sure with a close range finish to secure a deserved three points against a useful Humbertherm side.

This result moved Town up to third in the table but they know there will be stiffer tests to come and Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping to have a full squad to choose from in forthcoming weeks.

Town side: Lewis Burchnall, Daryl Dunn, Andy Cooling, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Dave Marshall, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming (Tom Phillips), Will Carter, Scott Wilson, Matty Low. Subs: Jonathon Seymour, Dave Anderson, Keith Jones.

On Saturday 8th October Town were due to host Immingham Bluestone in the Lincs Junior Cup but the visitors withdrew from the competition owing to injuries.

Town's next game is at home to Skegness Utd on Wednesday 12th October - kick-off 7.45pm.

In the end this was a very comfortable victory for Town but they had to come from a goal behind after conceding within the first two minutes. Manager Paul Johnson had no less than nineteen players unavailable on the day with notable absentees including Keith Jones, Daryl Dunn, Alec Enderby, Gareth Melia and long-term absentee Steve Brown. To add to the problem Ollie Johnson, Dave Marshall, Craig Gordon and Jonathon Seymour were all struggling with injuries but the late availability of Matty Low to join the bench was a rare bonus.

Lewis Burchnall, Jamie Lamming and Jonathon Seymour were restored to the starting line-up with Tom Phillips making his first start of the season alongside Ollie Johnson in the centre of midfield. However, the game had barely begun when the visitors took the lead. Jamie Lamming conceded a corner on the right and when the ball was crossed over their centre half powered a header into the roof of the net.

Town needed an immediate response and they thought they had equalised when Chris Johnson poked the ball in from close range after Craig Gordon's neat header had been parried by the keeper. However, the assistant referee's flag came to the aid of the away team. Jonathon Seymour fired just over after Tom Phillips had picked him out with a fine pass and Craig Gordon fired wide after a neat interchange with Tommy Chalk.

However, with the pressure building it was no surprise when Town drew level from a familiar source. Tommy Chalk was the architect as he drove forward down the left before delivering a great ball for top scorer Craig Gordon to head in at the far post. The visitors had hardly resettled before Town added a second goal on twenty minutes. A fine Town move ended with Scott Wilson squaring the ball to Jonathon Seymour and he swept the ball past the keeper for a fine finish.

Shortly afterwards John had to be replaced by Matty Low owing to a tight hamstring but by now Town were playing with greater fluency and they added a third goal when Scott Wilson curled a shot into the top corner after good work from Michael Harness. Town could easily have added to their total before the break but they will have been satisfied with a two goal lead having conceded so early in the game.

Dave Anderson replaced Jamie Lamming early in the second half and the opening twety minutes of the half was something of a stalemate. Sleaford enjoyed more possession but rarely troubled the Town back four with Dave Marshall in commanding form. The game was drifting along fairly aimlessly until Town upped the tempo and added a fourth goal. Michael Harness's defence splitting pass was just deflected away from Scott Wilson by the defender but when the loose ball fell to Craig Gordon he scored his second with a delightful chip over a stranded Sleaford keeper. Sleaford looked to reduce the arrears and a superb long range effort struck the bar with keeper Lewis Burchnall well beaten.

This seemed to revitalise Town and they added a further two goals in quick succession. Firstly Matty Low turned in Ollie Johnson's driven cross at the far post before Chris Johnson thundered in a fine header from a superb Dave Anderson cross. Scott Spooner had been introduced in place of Tom Phillips as Town looked to see out the game but Dave Anderson's misplaced back pass presented their striker with a clear chance that he accepted gratefully. Nevertheless, this was a decent performance from Town who secured their second victory in the space of four days.

Town now have a ten day break before they play Humbertherm at home on Wednesday 5th October when Manager Paul Johnson will be hoping to have a fully fit squad to choose from.

Horncastle Town 5 Heckington 1 Lincolnshire League

21-09-2011

By Paul Johnson

Town returned to winning ways with a resounding victory against a strong Heckington side on Wednesday evening. However, no-one watching would have predicted the final score line after an opening twenty minutes that was totally dominated by the visitors but having forced their way back into the game, Town played some fine football and ended up worthy winners.

Matty Low, Tommy Chalk and Dave Marshall all returned to the starting line-up which meant a reshuffle with Gareth Melia starting in midfield alongside Ollie Johnson and Jonathon Seymour and Jamie Lamming dropping to the bench. The other absentee was Daryl Dunn who sustained a head injury at Moorlands that will keep him out for two weeks.

Heckington began the game strongly and Town were forced to defend in depth for the opening quarter of the game. Heckington's front four were very influential and Town were finding it difficult to get any meaningful possession. Keeper Keith Jones did well to turn away a fierce drive but he was a spectator minutes later as a near post header flashed just wide of the near post. However, the visitors were not to be denied and when their left winger evaded Dave Marshall's challenge, his low shot came back off the far post before being knocked in from close range.

Only Michael Harness posed any real attacking threat for Town in the early stages and he was unlucky to see his drive come back off the keepers legs following a neat interchange with Scott Wilson. Minutes later a looping header clipped the far post as Heckington looked to double their advantage but with twenty five minutes gone Town drew level with a fine goal.Michael was again involved as he retrieved a crossfield pass from Tommy Chalk before finding Dave Marshall whose fine cross was headed into the top corner by the diving Gareth Melia.

The momentum of the game then swung towards Town and Craig Gordon saw a fierce shot go just over. Michael Harness and Tommy Chalk were getting forward at every opportunity and with Ollie Johnson and Gareth Melia controlling midfield it was no surprise when Town added a second on forty minutes. Gareth Melia was again on the score sheet as he dived forward bravely to head in a superb ball from Ollie Johnson. Ollie almost added a third on the stroke of half-time but his free-kick was well held by the keeper.

Town were perhaps a little fortunate to be ahead at the interval but their second half showing was very impressive and having started brightly they soon added a third goal. Scott Wilson did well on the right before finding Michael Harness who burst between two defenders before firing a low shot into the far corner. This was no more than Michael deserved because he was outstanding throughout.

Town could have effectively ended the game as a contest minutes later when Tommy Chalk broke clear but he chose to square the ball to Scott Wilson rather than shooting and the Heckington defence cleared the ball. The visitors were still a threat but with Chris Johnson and Alec Enderby in commanding form at the heart of Town's defence, Heckington created few scoring opportunities. Jamie Lamming had replace the injured Dave Marshall at half-time and he had a fine second half as Town looked to consolidate their position.

Craig Gordon went close on a couple of occasions but it was his strike partner Scott Wilson who added Town's fourth goal with a fine finish after more good work from Michael Harness. Substitutes Tom Phillips and Jonathon Seymour were introduced in place of Tommy Chalk and Gareth Melia and it was Jonathon who completed the scoring with a simple finish after Scott Wilson had pulled the ball back from the byline.

The final margin of victory was perhaps harsh on Heckington who had contributed a lot to a very entertaining game but Town deserve credit for weathering the early storm before creating and taking the chances that their positive play created. However, injuries to Dave Marshall and Gareth Melia will be a concern to Manager Paul Johnson ahead of the visit of Sleaford Town Reserves on Saturday - kick-off on The Wong 3pm.

Town side: Keith Jones, Dave Marshall (Jamie Lamming), Matty Low, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Gareth Melia (Tom Phillips), Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson, Tommy Chalk (Jonathon Seymour).

Lincoln Moorlands 2 Horncastle Town 0 Challenge Cup 1st round

17-09-2011

By Paul Johnson

Town will not be travelling to Sincil Bank at the end of this season to compete in the Challenge Cup Final following a poor and lacklustre display at Lincoln Moorlands. Neither side emerged with a great deal of credit in what was a poor game of football but a controversial opening goal for the hosts swung the tie their way and Town simply had no response.

With Matty Low, Lewis Burchnall and Dave Marshall unavailable, Daryl Dunn, Keith Jones and Jonathon Seymour were restored to the starting line-up. There was also a welcome return from Tommy Chalk on the bench but he was unable to inspire a strangely out of sorts Town side who offered little throughout the ninety minutes.

Town were in control of proceedings throughout the first half but a series of injuries disrupted the flow of the game, the most notable of which resulted in Daryl Dunn having to be substituted with just over thirty minutes played. Scott Wilson headed a Michael Harness cross wide and Gareth Melia looped a shot beyond the far post as Town pushed froward in the early stages. Ollie Johnson fired just over and he was then denied by a fine challenge after good approach play from Scott Wilson.

However, despite their possession Town were finding it hard to break down a determined Moorlands defence and Chris Johnson and Alec Enderby had to remain alert at the heart of Town's defence. Keith Jones in the Town goal was rarely called upon but the Moorlands keeper was also having an easy time of things as Town struggled to create any clear scoring opportunities. Michael Harness just failed to bring down a fine crossfield pass from Jonathon Seymour as he broke clear on the right and the chance went begging.

Daryl Dunn was then replaced by Tommy Chalk after sustaining a bad head injury caused by a flailing elbow and this meant a reshuffle with Gareth Melia switching to the right. Town's best chance of the half came just before the break when Ollie Johnson picked out Craig Gordon with a fine diagonal ball. "Flash" cut inside before firing a terrific shot against the bar with the keeper saving the follow-up effort from Michael Harness.

With the teams level at the break Town should have been confident of creating chances in the second period if they could produce more quality in the final third but despite starting the half brightly, they were rocked back ten minutes in when Moorlands took the lead. When the ball was played out wide to the right, their winger looked yards offside but the assistant referee kept his flag down and the resulting low cross was turned in from close range past a bemused Keith Jones in Town's goal.

Manager Paul Johnson was looking for an immediate response from his players but nothing materialised and Town rarely looked like scoring. Tommy Chalk had to go off injured following a heavy challenge and further positional changes were necessary with Jamie Lamming dropping to right back and Tom Phillips coming into midfield. Ollie Johnson produced rare moments of quality with his balls forward but apart from a Michael Harness cross that eluded everyone Town failed to threaten the opposition goal. Chris Johnson could perhaps have done better with a header and Jonathon Seymour opted to pass when a shot was the better option but in truth, the Moorlands keeper was never tested. Dave Anderson was introduced on the left and Gareth Melia pushed up front as Town looked to force the issue but with time running out Moorlands added a second goal with Town again looking for an offside flag.

Whilst the goals may have been controversial, it would be unfair to deny the home side their victory because they worked hard throughout and deservedly progressed through to the next round.

Town will be hoping to bounce back when they return to league action this Wednesday with a home game against Heckington - kick-off on The Wong 7.45pm.

Horncastle Town 3 Swineshead 1 Lincolnshire League

14-09-2011

By Paul Johnson

Town bounced back from their disappointing performance against Nettleham with a convincing display against a useful Swineshead side. A brace of goals from top scorer Craig Gordon and a first for the season for strike partner Scott Wilson proved decisive but Town will know that they could have won by a greater margin had they converted more of the chances they created.

Town's starting eleven showed one change from Saturday with Dave Marshall replacing the unfit Daryl Dunn at full-back. Manager Paul Johnson showed faith in his players and this was rewarded with a confident first thirty minutes in which Town should have secured all three points.

With Matty Low and Michael Harness a constant threat in wide areas, Town soon began to create chances and they were rewarded for their positive start with the opening goal on fifteen minutes. Michael's cross was flicked on by Craig Gordon and Matty Low did well to loop a far post header back over the keeper before Scott Wilson nodded the ball over the line from close range. Even better was to follow as Town added a second goal five minutes later. Dave Marshall advanced from full-back before finding Michael Harness wide on the right and his first time cross was volleyed past the keeper by Craig Gordon to complete a fine team goal.

Town continued to dominate but Swineshead showed they had the ability to respond when their centre forward flicked on a long clearance to his strike partner who lifted the ball over the bar. Town then had three great opportunities to effectively kill off the game but a mixture of good defending and poor finishing denied them. Firstly Michael Harness played a clever ball into the path of the advancing Dave Marshall but his goal bound effort was blocked. Craig Gordon then had two great opportunities to add to his tally after being set up by both Matty Low and Jamie Lamming but on both occasions Craig failed to hit the target.

Town were made to rue their missed opportunities when the visitors pulled a goal back ten minutes before the break. Their number 11 was lively all game and he held off challenges from Jamie Lamming and Alec Enderby before rifling the ball into the top corner to give Town's keeper Lewis Burchnall no chance. The momentum remained with Swineshead for the remainder of the half but Town held firm to retain their goal advantage at the break.

The second half was more evenly contested but in fairness to Town they performed solidly throughout and still created the better scoring opportunities.

Matty Low's forceful run and low cross caused problems before Scott Wilson headed an Ollie Johnson free-kick wide. Michael Harness then appeared to be tripped in the penalty area but as the referee turned down Town's appeals, Michael got up to clip a superb ball to the far post before it was scrambled clear.

Town's defence was looking solid with Chris Johnson and Alec Enderby superb at the heart of the defence. however, when Swineshead's centre forward turned sharply in the box, Lewis Burchnall saved well with his legs. Midway through the half Town were indebted to Lewis again when he pulled off an outstanding save to somehow turn the ball away when a goal seemed certain.

This seemed to rejuvenate Town and they again created chances to secure the win. Daryl Dunn replaced the impressive Dave Marshall and Jonathon Seymour came on for Michael Harness as Town looked to force home their advantage. Craig Gordon saw his low shot well saved after good work from Scott Wilson and the same player fired over after a good through ball from Ollie Johnson. Nevertheless, Town were not to be denied and when Jonathon Seymour played a clever ball through, "Flash" finally got his second goal with an assured finish. He was replaced by Dave Anderson as Town looked to consolidate their position and they were able to play out the final few minutes with ease.

This coming Saturday Town will be hoping to follow up their win with a victory at Lincoln Moorlands in the Challenge Cup. Kick-off 2.30pm.

Horncastle Town 0 Nettleham 3 Lincolnshire League

By Paul Johnson

This was a disappointing result and performance from Town given their promising start to the season but in truth there should not have been a three goal margin between the two sides. The strong winds proved difficult for both teams but Town had good chances at key points in the game but failed to take them and two goals early in the second half from the visitors proved decisive.

Town began the game brightly and Michael Harness saw his shot charged down following good approach play from Craig Gordon. Michael then turned provider as he played in Scott Wilson but his well struck shot was superbly saved by the Nettleham keeper.

Town survived a scare at the other end when a header from a corner came back off the bar with keeper Lewis Burchnall beaten but it was Town who continued to look the more likely scorers and Craig Gordon's fierce drive just cleared the crossbar. Ollie Johnson had a shot blocked as Town continued to press but it was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour. Alec Enderby's misplaced clearance gave the visitors the chance to put a ball into the Town penalty area and although Lewis Burchnall reacted well to turn away the initial shot, Town failed to react to the loose ball and it was turned in at the far post.

Town knew that they needed to respond positively in the second half and when Daryl Dunn's through ball picked out Matty Low he looked certain to score but the keeper again reacted well to come

off his line and save with his legs. This save proved pivotal because within two minutes Nettleham had doubled their advantage albeit in controversial circumstances. Chris Johnson was

penalised for a foul just outside the penalty even though the opponent appeared to dive but the resulting free-kick was curled into the far corner to give the visitors a commanding lead. With Town still somewhat despondent, Nettleham took full advantage when their centre forward turned his marker before firing over a low cross that was turned in at the far post.

to Town's credit, they could easily have capitulated but they continued to work hard and Matty Low fired just wide after good work from Ollie Johnson. With Nettleham content to sit on their lead, Town dominated possession in the last quarter of the game but they could not make the breakthrough they needed. Substitutes Robert Rawdon, Dave Anderson and Jonathon Seymour were all introduced but despite their efforts Town were unable to make any real impression on a well organised Nettleham defensive line and they were left to rue the missed chances earlier in the game.

Town will be hoping to bounce back this coming Wednesday evening when they entertain Swineshead on The Wong - kick-off 7.45pm.

Town looked to have secured a valuable point when youngster Kieran Hotchin equalised in the final minute but a lack of concentration cost Town dearly as the home side took all three points in added time with a free header from a free-kick. In truth, the hosts were deserved winners as Town struggled to play with any fluency or cohesion throughout but they will still feel it was a point dropped after they had fought hard to get back into the game.

The home side settled the quicker and were much the sharper of the sides in the opening twenty minutes. However, they failed to create any clear scoring opportunities and as Town began to settle they looked the more likely scorers. Ollie Johnson and Steve Brown began to get a hold of the game in midfield with Ollie distributing the ball intelligently. Michael Harness was a threat down the right and he tested the keeper twice in quick succession.

Michael then turned provider as he latched onto Jonathon Seymour's cross field pass before picking out Craig Gordon whose header was well saved. Daryl Dunn was linking well with Michael down the right and his far post cross caused confusion in the home defence.

Grimsby Boro got forward in numbers but Town's defence looked solid with Chris Johnson and Dave Marshall working well. Andy Cooling's experience was invaluable on the left and he instigated a lot of moves from the back but too often Town were guilty of conceding possession needlessly. However, this was not the case when Town took the lead on the half hour. Scott Wilson held the ball up well before finding Michael Harness who cut inside before exchanging passes with Craig Gordon and firing through the keepers legs.

Lewis Burchnall did well to preserve Town's lead when he pulled off a fine save and Town looked to be going into the break in the lead but Grimsby Boro were awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the half. Chris Johnson did well to clear the initial danger but when he closed down the loose ball the ball struck his arm and the resulting penalty was duly despatched to bring the teams level.

Town started the second half brightly but as the game became stretched in the final thirty minutes it was the home side who dominated proceedings. Lewis Burchnall reacted superbly to tip over a defensive header from Dave Marshall and then dived to his left to save a well struck shot. Town's keeper was soon in action again as he tipped over a fiercely struck shot but there was nothing he could do when Town took the lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Town failed to clear the ball in the penalty area before a low cross was stabbed home at the far post.

Town could have been forgiven for giving up on the game having conceded late but to their credit they showed great resolve to get back into the game. Substitute Kieran Hotchin made a real impact and she he was fouled, Ollie Johnson's free-kick was headed at the keeper by Steve Brown. Craig Gordon then saw his shot deflected wide after more good work from Brown. Keeper Lewis Burchnall then gathered a cross before rolling the ball out to Chris Johnson who advanced forward before finding Craig Gordon but his fierce shot flashed just wide of the far post.

Town looked to be running out of time but as the game entered the final minute Michael Harness slung over another fine cross from the right and Kieran Hotchin showed great determination to get in between two defenders before forcing the ball home. This should have been enough to have secured Town a share of the spoils but when Steve Brown conceded a free-kick near the halfway line, the resulting cross was headed over a helpless Lewis Burchnall. Town will feel aggrieved not to have hung on to a useful point against a strong Grimsby Boro side but a defensive lapse right at the death was to prove their undoing.

This coming Town entertain Nettleham on The Wong with the visitors having made a good start to their Lincs League campaign after withdrawing from the Central Midlands Supreme League. Kick-off 3pm.

Town will feel aggrieved not to have come away with all three points having dominated proceedings for eighty minutes of the game. An Ollie Johnson penalty looked to have proved decisive but with three minutes remaining the home side were awarded a penalty of their own which they duly converted to gain a share of the spoils.

With several players unavailable, Harry Hinkley, Jonathon Seymour and Jamie Lamming made their first starts of the season with Steve Brown reverting to centre half alongside skipper Chris Johnson. Town settled quickly and soon gained the initiative with Ollie Johnson and Jamie Lamming prominent in midfield. Michael Harness was a threat down the right and Craig Gordon fired over after Michael's cross had been touched back to him by John Seymour. Craig then saw a header comfortably saved following an excellent cross from Dave Marshall who did well in an unfamiliar left-back position.

Town's defence looked solid with Harry Hinkley fitting in well and keeper Lewis Burchnall was rarely troubled during the first half. Town continued to press and took the lead after thirty minutes. Michael Harness's well struck shot was turned away by the keeper but as Craig Gordon chased the loose ball he was bundled over and Ollie Johnson converted the penalty with confidence.

Town held their advantage until the break and continued to dominate proceedings at the start of the second half. Michael Harness broke clear of two defenders but his low shot was saved by the keepers legs. The same player then struck a superb angled shot from twenty yards but the keeper again pulled off a fine save. Jack Baxter and Kieran Hotchin were introduced in place of Jonathon Seymour and Jamie Lamming who were both struggling with injury and they both acquitted themselves well as Town looked for a second goal. This should have arrived midway through the half when Craig Gordon drew the keeper before pulling the ball back for strike partner Scott Wilson but he fired straight at the keeper from close range.

Kieran Hotchin's clever back heel found Craig Gordon but he fired wide and then the same player cut inside and fired just over after a fine run from Jack Baxter.

With time running out Swineshead pushed their centre half up front in search of an equaliser and Town were pushed back in the final ten minutes. Lewis Burchnall scrambled a low shot wide and from the resulting corner Ollie Johnson just did enough to prevent a free header at the far post. Swineshead looked to be running out of time but when a long ball forward caused confusion in the Town defence, Harry Hinkley was penalised for a foul on their centre forward and the resulting penalty was despatched past a helpless Lewis Burchnall in Town's goal.

The final result was a disappointing one given Town's dominance for the majority of the game but they were made to pay for missed chances during the second half. Nevertheless, a draw was still a good result away from home and there were some creditable performances on the night. The back four did well with Steve Brown very solid at centre half and Harry Hinkley doing well on his full first team debut. Ollie Johnson was prominent in midfield throughout and Michael Harness again did well on the right. Craig Gordon and Scott Wilson worked hard up front and are forming a good understanding and they will hope to be on the scoresheet when Town visit Grimsby Boro this coming Saturday - kick-off 3pm.

Town side: Lewis Burchnall, Harry Hinkley, Dave Marshall, Steve Brown, Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Jamie Lamming (Jack Baxter), Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson, Jonathon Seymour (Kieran Hotchin)

Horncastle Town 4 Hykeham Town 1 Lincolnshire League

27-08-2011

By Paul Johnson

Town continued their promising start to the season with a well deserved win against a familiar looking Hykeham side. All Town's players performed well on the day but the main plaudits must go to striker Craig Gordon who scored all four goals and was a handful throughout the ninety minutes.

Manager Paul Johnson restored Alec Enderby to the starting line-up with Dave Marshall moving to right back and Daryl Dunn dropping to the bench. The remainder of the squad was the same as that which defeated Louth Town in the opening league game but it was the visitors who started the brighter of the two sides with Town looking off the pace in the opening ten minutes. Hykeham were quicker to the ball in all departments and Town struggled to get any meaningful possession but having survived some early pressure Town began to settle down with Steve Brown and Ollie Johnson prominent in midfield.

Matty Low and Michael Harness were operating effectively down the flanks and Town soon began to create scoring opportunities. Craig Gordon's neat flick released strike partner Scott Wilson but the Hykeham defender put in a timely challenge before Scott could get a strike on goal. Chris Johnson volleyed a far post cross just wide and Matty Low fired into the side netting after good work from Gareth Melia.

At the other end Town keeper Keith Jones was looking very solid and he comfortably held onto a well struck free-kick. Keith's distribution was good all game and he was instrumental in Town's opening goal after twenty minutes. He gathered a high cross before clearing the ball quickly to Michael Harness wide on the right. Michael controlled the ball superbly before cutting inside and finding Craig Gordon who combined cleverly with Scott Wilson before wrong footing the Hykeham keeper with a low left-footed drive.

This was no more than Town deserved and Scott Wilson almost added an audacious second with a back heel flick off a near post Michael Harness corner but his effort was headed off the line with the keeper beaten. The game then became more even as Hykeham pushed for an equaliser. Keith Jones saved superbly from close range with his legs and Town were forced to defend in determined fashion as Hykeham pressed. Michael Harness headed the ball off the line following a corner and Chris Johnson got in a superb block as Hykeham seemed certain to score.

However, in the final minutes of the half Town regained the initiative and added a second goal ten minutes before the break. Alec Enderby showed great awareness to turn cleverly before playing a great ball inside the full back for Matty Low. His cross fell to Ollie Johnson who controlled the ball well before laying it into the path of Craig Gordon who finished unerringly with a low shot into the far corner.

Despite going into the break with a two goal cushion, Town knew they would have to work hard in the second period to maintain their advantage and the opening stages of the half were somewhat cagey. Town defended well when Hykeham pushed forward with Dave Marshall having another fine game but as the half progressed Town began to press for a third goal. This duly arrived in spectacular fashion midway through the half. Craig Gordon received the ball thirty yards from goal and having turned quickly, he fired a superb shot over the Hykeham keeper into the roof of the net to give Town an unassailable lead.

The hard working Scott Wilson went close to adding a fourth but he dragged his shot just wide of the far post. The same player then had a goal bound effort blocked and Craig Gordon fired into the side netting having run onto a superb ball from Ollie Johnson.

Town then introduced all three substitutes with Steve Brown, Dave Marshall and Scott Wilson being replaced by Jamie Lamming, Jonathon Seymour and Daryl Dunn. All three did well and brought fresh impetus in the closing twenty minutes as Town looked for more goals. Jonathon Seymour went close on a couple of occasions and Matty Low fired over after great work from Daryl Dunn. Michael Harness went close to getting the goal his performance deserved but his well struck shot drifted just wide of the far post.

Hykeham then pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining when their centre forward ran onto a long clearance before rounding Keith Jones and finishing comfortably. This set up a nervy finish but Town responded in a positive manner to secure the three points. Ollie Johnson controlled the ball well before releasing Michael Harness who cut inside before reversing the ball to Craig Gordon who fired past a despairing Hykeham keeper. This completed a very satisfactory performance for Town and an outstanding individual one from "Flash" who has now scored six goals in Town's opening two league games.

Town will be hoping to continue their positive start to the season when they visit Swineshead on Tuesday night but a 6.30pm kick-off may prove difficult for some players who will have work commitments. Matty Low and Gareth Melia are unavailable in addition to Tommy Chalk and both Alec Enderby and Daryl Dunn are doubtful.

Town side: Keith Jones, Dave Marshall (Daryl Dunn), Gareth Melia, Alec Enderby, Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Steve Brown (Jamie Lamming), Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson (Jonathon Seymour), Matty Low.

Horncastle Town 3 Louth Town Reserves 1 Lincolnshire League

24-08-2011

Att 105

By Paul Johnson

Town's league campaign got off to a positive start on Wednesday evening with a hard earned victory against a useful Louth Town side. Despite a somewhat indifferent pre-season, Town approached the game in a positive manner and a brace of goals from Craig Gordon plus a penalty from Ollie Johnson brought Town a well-deserved three points.

Despite the absence of Alec Enderby and Tommy Chalk, manager Paul Johnson was able to name a strong looking line-up with Keith Jones, Daryl Dunn and Scott Wilson making their full Lincs League debuts for the club. The remainder of the starting eleven was familiar enough and Town started the game brightly. Matty Low and Michael Harness provided much needed width as Town dominated in the early stages and Ollie Johnson saw a long range effort well saved. Craig Gordon's through ball released Scott Wilson through the middle but the bounce of the ball enabled an opposing defender to put in a telling challenge before Scott could get his shot away.

Town then had a great chance to take the lead when Craig Gordon was clean through on goal but his low shot went just wide of the far post. Town's frustrations continued when Ollie Johnson saw another shot well saved before Gareth Melia looped a header just wide after Scott Wilson had helped on Ollie Johnson's free-kick.

Louth were posing a threat themselves when they got forward and keeper Keith Jones comfortably saved a far post header. The back four of Daryl Dunn, Dave Marshall, Chris Johnson and Gareth Melia looked solid with Dave dominant in the air but when a long ball eluded the central defenders Louth's centre forward lifted the ball over the crossbar.

Town continued to threaten and when Steve Brown won the ball with a typically determined challenge he played in Craig Gordon who ran clear before rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the unguarded net. This was no more than Town deserved and they looked to consolidate their lead as half-time approached but in the final moments Louth drew level in fortuitous circumstances. Gareth Melia was harshly adjudged to have fouled an opponent just outside the penalty area and the resulting free-kick was headed into his own net by the unfortunate Daryl Dunn.

With the teams level at the break, Town were hoping to start the second half strongly and when Michael Harness's corner was superbly controlled by skipper Chris Johnson he seemed certain to score but he volleyed the ball over the crossbar. Scott Wilson and Craig Gordon both went close as Town pressed but the hosts were indebted to keeper Keith Jones who did well to save at the foot of his near post from an angled drive.

Louth's keeper then saved well with his legs to deny Craig Gordon but with an hour played "Flash" added his and Town's second with a low shot through the keepers legs at the near post after good work from Scott Wilson. Moments later the three points were virtually secured when Craig was felled in the penalty area off the ball and after the referee reduced the visitors to ten men and awarded a penalty, Ollie Johnson stepped forward to fire the ball into the corner to give Town a two-goal cushion.

Town continued to create chances and Michael Harness was unlucky not to get the goal his performance deserved. However, to their credit, Louth enjoyed their most productive spell of the game in the last twenty minutes and they could easily have reduced the deficit had their final ball been better. Jamie Lamming and Jonathon Seymour were introduced in place of Daryl Dunn and Matty Low and they both did well with Jonathon unlucky to see his goal disallowed for handball after neat approach play from Craig Gordon.

Town were able to see out the final minutes to secure all three points but they will perhaps feel they should have pushed on when Louth were reduced to ten men with a quarter of the game left. Nevertheless, the performance was an encouraging one and although there will be sterner tests to come, Town will be pleased to have got off to a winning start. All the players acquitted themselves well with Jones, Dunn and Wilson all doing well on debut. The defence worked hard behind a midfield quartet in which Michael Harness and Steve Brown were outstanding nd up front, Craig Gordon and Scott Wilson combined well with Craig once again a familiar name on the scoresheet.

This coming Saturday Town entertain Hykeham Town on The Wong - kick-off 3pm.

Town side: Keith Jones, Daryl Dunn (Jamie Lamming), Gareth Melia, Dave Marshall, Chris Johnson, Ollie Johnson, Michael Harness, Steve Brown, Craig Gordon, Scott Wilson, Matty Low (Jonathon Seymour). Subs: Harry Hinkley, Lewis Burchnall

Pre Season

Town's pre-season has been somewhat mixed and manager Paul Johnson will be hoping to see an improvement in the level of performance once the league gets underway when Town entertain Louth Town reserves on Wednesday 24th August.

Town have been unable to field a settled side throughout pre-season owing to unavailability and injury and this has made it difficult for them to find any consistency. The loss of Richard Jackson and Tony Edwards to Boston Utd is disappointing but Scott Wilson, Jonathon Seymour and Daryl Dunn should be welcome additions to the squad. The emergence of younger players such as Kieran Hotchin, Alex Agorini, Harry Hinkley and Matt Simmons is also very encouraging and they will hopefully be a regular part of the senior squads this season.

An opening 4-1 win against Spilsby with goals from Craig Gordon 2, Michael Harness and Tom Phillips was followed by a 5-2 victory against the Lincolnshire Fire Service with Craig Gordon 3 and Scott Wilson 2 sharing the goals. Town then entertained a strong Boston Utd XI in the John Rawdon Memorial game and despite losing 2-1, Town turned in a creditable performance with Tommy Chalk on target early in the second half. Fitness proved decisive in the end as Town tired in the last quarter with Boston pinching a late goal to earn their win.

An encouraging start to the campaign came to a resounding halt as Town turned in a dreadful performance against Washingborough but they bounced back the following Tuesday with a 3-0 victory against RAF Coningsby with goals from Scott Wilson 2, and Alex Agorini. Town played the same opposition away from home the following week and with a much changed side drew 3-3 with Scott and Alex again on target.

Town's final friendly was against Coningsby and it was a much more familiar looking Town side which began the game. Despite dominating proceedings in the first half Town were guilty of missing a number of chances and the visitors took advantage to lead at the break. However, three second half goals from Craig Gordon, Scott wilson and Steve Brown secured a 3-1 win.

Town will be hoping to continue in the same vein when they entertain Louth Town Reserves but the unavailability of Matty Low and Tommy Chalk plus doubts about Alec Enderby and Daryl Dunn may require another reshuffle and further frustration for manager Paul Johnson. However, this will provide an opportunity for some of the fringe players to stake a claim for a regular place in the starting line-up.

Town's league campaign begins on Wednesday 24th August when Louth Town Reserves visit The Wong - kick-off 7.45pm.
